Chapter 1 - The Footage He Never Wanted to See

The tablet screen flickered once before Victor’s recorded dashcam feed stabilized under the muted lamps of the penthouse. Darius stared at the display, his pulse hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast. On the video, the black town car never touched the expressway leading toward JFK. Instead, three unmarked SUVs boxed the sedan against the concrete barriers of an abandoned freight depot near the East River. Muzzle flashes illuminated the driving rain. Men wearing familiar black armbands—Albert’s personal enforcers, not Lorenzo Romano’s syndicate—dragged his wife out into the downpour.

Darius leaned his palms flat against the mahogany desk, knuckles turning chalk-white. ""Victor... who authorized those men?""

""Your uncle gave the order thirty minutes before you told her to pack,"" Victor murmured, his shoulder still seeping dark crimson through torn ballistic wool. ""He paid them five hundred thousand to make sure she disappeared off the books before reaching Heathrow. She wasn't supposed to survive the night, boss. When I saw Albert’s lieutenant pull the trigger on my radiator, I took the ditch. I shoved her into the marsh grass behind the rusted shipping containers and drew the pack away.""

""Where is she now?"" Darius’s voice dropped to a guttural rasp that made the security chief straighten despite his agony. ""Tell me you didn't leave her out there.""

""I told her to run toward the lower docks, but they had dogs,"" Victor confessed, his breath shaking. ""I had to circle back to bring you the server log she tucked into my breast pocket. Look at the ledger, Darius. Look at what she found before you tore up her world.""

Darius dragged the encrypted USB drive from Victor’s bloody fingers and jammed it into the console. The spreadsheet opened instantly, revealing shell accounts funneling millions directly from the syndicate's core shipping docks into an offshore trust controlled entirely by Albert. The diner meeting with Lorenzo Romano hadn't been an act of treason; Elena had been mortgaging her late mother’s estate to buy back a ledger Lorenzo had stolen from Albert’s courier. She was attempting to hand Darius undeniable proof of his uncle's greed without starting an all-out bloodbath in the middle of Manhattan.

A wave of cold nausea washed through Darius’s stomach. The cruel words he had spit at her just an hour earlier—*If I ever see your face in this city again, I’ll kill you myself*—echoed through the empty chamber, sharp as broken glass. He remembered the faint shudder in her frame, the quiet nobility in her eyes as the elevator doors sealed her away, and the bitter truth she left behind: The ghost is in your house.

""Call every loyal soldier on our payroll,"" Darius ordered, his eyes turning to black ice. ""Rouse the harbor patrol, the street captains, and the warehouse lookouts. If so much as a stray raindrop bruised her skin, Albert will spend the remainder of his life wishing he had died in that cradle seventy years ago.""

""Boss, Albert called a mandatory family banquet at the Grand Sovereign Hotel for midnight,"" Victor warned, pressing a gauze pack to his collarbone. ""He believes Elena is dead. He announced he’s presenting the new partnership treaty with Lorenzo’s cartel on the grand ballroom stage to celebrate our house’s 'cleansing.'""

Darius pulled a customized heavy-caliber sidearm from the hidden compartment under the desk, chambering a round with a smooth, lethal click. ""Let him pour his vintage champagne. Let him welcome his snakes to the table. Tonight, my uncle learns what happens when you strike a queen while the king is looking the other way.""

He walked toward the private elevator, his black trench coat billowing behind him. The city streets blurred into smears of neon light as his motorcade tore through the flooding asphalt, racing against the clock toward the darkest waterfront corners where a woman he swore to protect was running for her life.
