Chapter 2 - The mistress In Corner Office 4B

At two o’clock in the morning, the thirty-second floor of the Whitmore Logistics tower was completely silent except for the hum of server racks and the clicking of Daniel's wingtip shoes.
Vanessa Cole was waiting in the executive suite, wearing an emerald silk blouse and a nervous, brittle smile that vanished the moment she saw Daniel's face.
"Daniel? What are you doing here?" she asked, rising from behind her polished walnut desk. "You were supposed to text me after the dinner. Did that boring housewife sign the severance agreement?"
Daniel didn't answer right away; he looked like a man who had walked through a winter gale without an overcoat.
He threw the second envelope onto her glass conference table, scattering several quarterly report folders onto the carpet.
"Look at this," Daniel rasped, tearing at his silk necktie until the collar button snapped off. "Look at the ownership registry on page four."
Vanessa picked up the document, her manicured fingers trembling slightly as her eyes scanned the embossed legal seal at the top.
"Eleanor Bennett Family Trust..." she read aloud, her voice faltering. "Daniel, who is Eleanor Bennett? Isn't that the old woman from the nursing home whose photos Claire keeps in the hallway?"
"She wasn't in a state-funded home, Vanessa!" Daniel shouted, slamming his open palm against the wall, leaving a faint scuff mark on the silk wallpaper. "The trust owned the entire medical complex! Claire's family owned eighty-five percent of the commercial property along the riverfront before I even graduated from college!"
Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat, her mind racing to calculate what this meant for the bonus checks and luxury apartments Daniel had promised her.
"What about our company?" she stammered, stepping back. "Whitmore Logistics is yours! Your father gave you the CEO title!"
"My father held fifteen percent of the initial capitalization shares, Vanessa!" Daniel said, collapsing into the leather desk chair and grabbing his temples. "The remaining eighty-five percent was equity debt financed by Bennett Capital! We’ve been operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Claire's private family trust for twelve straight years!"
The office door creaked slightly behind them, catching both of them off guard.

Standing in the doorway was the overnight building supervisor, holding a clipboard and a ring of heavy brass keys.
"Excuse me, Mr. Whitmore," the supervisor said respectfully, though his eyes carried an unmistakable chill. "I have orders from building management to escort all non-essential personnel off the executive floor before the morning audit team arrives."
