Chapter 9 - The Trap at the Terminal

The private aviation hangar at Teterboro Airport was shrouded in dense morning fog as the sleek Gulfstream G650 touched down on the tarmac.

The jet taxied to a halt outside Hangar 4, its jet engines winding down with a high-pitched whine.

Standing on the tarmac in a heavy charcoal overcoat was Victor Vance, sixty-five years old, with predatory gray eyes and the cold, haughty demeanor of an untouchable European oligarch.

Beside him walked four private security contractors carrying heavy diplomatic pouches.

"Where is Julian's legal representative?" Victor snapped in an aristocratic accent as he entered the cavernous, dimly lit hangar.

"He was supposed to meet us with the collateral deeds for the solar patents."

"Julian’s representative couldn't make it, Victor," a voice called out from the high metal catwalks.

Victor froze, his security detail immediately reaching for their concealed weapons.

Before any of the guards could draw, the hangar’s massive industrial floodlights blazed to life in a blinding explosion of white light.

Standing fifty feet away, blocking the only vehicle exit, stood Lucas Hayes, flanked by twenty federal tactical agents in full body armor, their assault rifles raised with absolute discipline.

Beside Lucas stood Scarlett Vale, looking majestic in a black trench coat, holding an open leather binder.

"Victor Vance," Scarlett said, her voice amplified by the hangar’s public address system.

"Welcome back to New York. You're twenty years late for your board hearing."

Victor sneered, recovering his composure with arrogant disdain.

"You think this petty theatrical display frightens me, little girl? I hold diplomatic immunity through our Swiss commercial mission. Your FBI cannot touch these pouches."

Lucas walked forward alone, his measured steps echoing across the concrete floor until he stopped ten feet from Victor's lead guard.

"Diplomatic immunity doesn't cover international trafficking of stolen military-grade encryption keys, Vance," Lucas said calmly.

He held up a handheld digital scanner, pointing it directly at the diplomatic pouch in the lead guard's hand.

The scanner chirped twice, displaying a bright green match with the Department of Defense's stolen technology database.

"That hardware was stolen from the Fort Meade defense contractor three months ago to hack Ravenholt’s clean-tech grid," Lucas revealed, his eyes cold and deadly.

"That makes this a matter of national defense, not corporate arbitration. Your immunity was revoked by the State Department fifteen minutes ago."

Victor’s face went gray, his aristocratic arrogance shattering into absolute terror as the federal agents surged forward like a tidal wave.

"Drop your weapons! Hands in the air! Do it now!" Agent Miller barked.

The four guards dropped their pouches and fell to their knees on the concrete, hands clasped behind their heads.

Victor Vance stood alone in the center of the blinding white light, trembling violently as steel handcuffs were locked around his wrists.

Scarlett walked over, stopping beside Lucas, looking down at the man who had plotted her family's destruction from across the ocean.

"My father always told me that men who operate in the shadows only survive because no one turns on the lights," Scarlett said quietly.

"Enjoy the dark, Victor."
