Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Vulture

The silence in the grand boardroom was so absolute that the low hum of the ventilation system sounded like an engine turbine.
Arthur Vance, the senior board member, leaned forward, his weathered hands trembling as he reviewed the cryptographic authentication hashes displayed on the screen.
"These routing codes carry Julian's private digital key," Arthur said, his voice trembling with righteous fury. "Julian, you tried to frame Edward Vale's daughter to plunder the green tech patents."
Julian looked around the table, the panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade like cracked glass.
"It's a lie!" Julian screamed, stepping away from the table, his tie askew. "This janitor fabricated the logs! He’s a convicted felon or an industrial spy! Look at him! He belongs in the basement!"
Lucas didn't bother looking up from the floor, where he had already secured Vance Sterling in heavy plastic zip-ties from his tool belt.
"My honorable discharge papers from the United States Army Rangers are on file with human resources, Mr. Vale," Lucas said evenly, rising to his full height.
"Along with a top-secret security clearance that your offshore banking partners in the Caymans couldn't crack in three lifetimes."
The double doors at the back of the chamber opened again, revealing four special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent Miller.
"Julian Vale," Agent Miller announced, flashing his gold credentials. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate espionage."
Julian sank into his chair, weeping with pathetic, humiliating self-pity as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his manicured wrists.
"Scarlett, please," Julian begged, looking up at his niece as the agents dragged him toward the door. "I'm your father's brother! We're family!"
Scarlett looked down at him with cold, unyielding disgust.
"My father built this company on integrity, Julian," she said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "You aren't family. You're just an infection."
As the federal agents led Julian and Vance away, the remaining board members slowly stood up, turning toward Scarlett with sheepish, apologetic expressions.
Arthur Vance cleared his throat, offering a deep, respectful bow.
"Ms. Vale... on behalf of the board, we owe you a profound apology. Your leadership has saved this company from ruin."
Scarlett looked at the circle of wealthy, powerful men who had been ready to execute her corporate death sentence fifteen minutes ago.
"You don't owe me an apology, gentlemen," Scarlett said, her eyes drifting toward the quiet maintenance worker standing by the door with his toolbox.
"You owe your positions to the man who refused to look away when this building was rotting from within."
She turned her back on the board and walked toward Lucas, her heels clicking rhythmically against the glass floor.
"Mr. Hayes," she said softly.

"Yes, ma'am?"
"My office. Now."
