Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Rain

The two men in windbreakers stopped five feet from the booth, but instead of drawing weapons, the taller man raised both hands in a placating gesture.

"Lucas Hayes?" the man asked, pulling a laminated badge from his breast pocket. "Special Agent Henderson, FBI Financial Crimes Division."

Lucas kept his hand resting casually beneath his jacket, his eyes sweeping the street outside through the diner window to confirm there was no secondary perimeter.

"You're a long way from Foley Square, Agent Henderson," Lucas noted calmly.

Henderson nodded respectfully, pulling out a sealed manila envelope and setting it on the edge of the table.

"Julian Vale’s legal counsel attempted to post bail using offshore bearer bonds forty minutes ago," Henderson explained, his voice low.

"The funds were routed through an unlisted private equity group in Zurich called Orion Capital. We thought Ms. Vale should know."

Scarlett sat up straight, her relaxation vanishing instantly as her corporate instincts surged back.

"Orion Capital?" Scarlett repeated, her brow furrowing. "Orion was my father’s original investment partner when he founded Ravenholt thirty years ago. They went dark after the 2008 financial crash."

"They didn't go dark, Ms. Vale," Henderson said grimly.

"They were acquired by an international syndicate that specializes in hostile takeovers and corporate sabotage. Julian wasn't the mastermind behind this fraud; he was just their local contractor."

Lucas picked up the envelope, examining the customs declaration stamps and wire logs inside.

"The syndicate’s lead operating director is arriving in New York tomorrow morning on a private charter from Geneva," Lucas said, reading the flight manifest.

"Victor Vance."

Scarlett’s breath caught in her throat.

"Victor Vance is Arthur Vance’s estranged younger brother. He was exiled from the board twenty years ago for embezzling pension funds."

"He’s coming to finish what Julian failed to execute," Agent Henderson warned.

"The bureau is tracking his arrival, but until he commits a prosecutable act on US soil, our hands are tied regarding detention."

Lucas looked at Scarlett, seeing the sudden flicker of vulnerability return to her eyes.

He turned back to the federal agent, his voice flat, steady, and iron-clad.

"Leave his itinerary with me, Agent Henderson. We’ll make sure Mr. Vance gets the welcome he deserves."

When the agents left the diner, Scarlett stared down at the table, her hands trembling slightly against the red vinyl.

"It never ends, does it, Lucas?" she whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "No matter how high I climb, someone is always waiting in the dark to drag me down."

Lucas stood up, slid out of the booth, and walked around to her side.

He sat beside her on the narrow bench, wrapping a strong, protective arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest.

Scarlett leaned into his warmth, burying her face into his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

May you like

"You aren't climbing alone anymore, Scarlett," Lucas murmured into her hair.

"Let them bring their private jets and their Swiss syndicates. As long as I’m breathing, nobody touches you."
