Chapter 1 - The Confession in the Shadows

The heavy grandfather clock in the corner of the executive suite ticked with merciless precision.

Lucas Hayes kept his grip on the rusted steel handle of his toolbox, his steel-toed boots rooted to the pristine Italian marble.

Scarlett Vale pulled the charcoal wool blazer tighter around her shoulders, her knuckles turning bone white against the dark fabric.

"What's your name?" she asked again, her voice barely louder than the winter wind humming against the reinforced glass seventy stories above Midtown.

"Lucas Hayes, ma'am," he replied, keeping his gaze respectfully fixed on the polished mahogany coffee table.

Scarlett leaned back against the deep leather cushions of the sofa, letting out a long, ragged exhale.

"They're going to vote me out at seven, Lucas," she whispered, looking past him toward the shadowed hallway. "My uncle Julian called an emergency session. He claims I embezzled forty million dollars from our clean energy subsidiary."

Lucas shifted his weight, his blue eyes flicking toward the towering woman whose face commanded every major business magazine in North America.

He had spent five years in the army and seven years in industrial facility maintenance; he knew the scent of fear, and he knew the stench of a setup.

"Did you take the money, Ms. Vale?" Lucas asked quietly, breaking the cardinal rule of minimum-wage survival.

Scarlett snapped her head up, a sudden spark of her legendary corporate fire flashing through her hazel eyes.

"I poured every dime my father left me into the solar turbine grid in New Jersey," she said, her voice shaking with righteous indignation. "Julian forged the offshore transfer slips. He wants to liquidate the patents and sell the real estate to foreign private equity firms."

Lucas set his toolbox down on the marble floor with a dull, echoing metallic clunk.

He pulled a grease-stained clipboard from the side pouch of his navy coveralls, checking the printed maintenance order that had led him up here in the dark.

"Who issued Work Order 4402 for the seventieth-floor server closet at four-thirty this morning?" Lucas asked, pointing at the red barcode stamp.

Scarlett frowned, rising from the sofa and crossing the room with sharp, silent strides.

She took the clipboard from his calloused fingers, her thumb brushing the paper, and her face went completely bloodless.

"This came from Julian's personal executive assistant," she breathed, horror dawning behind her eyes. "Julian knows I come in at four to prepare for board sessions. He knew I would be dressing in my private chambers."

Lucas nodded slowly, his military instincts piecing together the invisible trap.

"If I had panicked when your blouse dropped and ran out into that hallway, who was waiting by the elevators?"

Scarlett’s hand flew to her throat as a wave of cold nausea washed over her.

"Julian’s head of corporate security, Vance Sterling. He’s always at the security desk by five."

"They didn't just want your shares, Ms. Vale," Lucas said coldly.

"They wanted a workplace misconduct scandal captured on the lobby security cameras before the market opened at nine."

Scarlett stared at the quiet maintenance worker standing in front of her.

For two agonizing years, she had been surrounded by Ivy League executives in ten-thousand-dollar suits who smiled to her face while sharpening knives for her back.

Yet here was a man in stained overalls who had decoded a corporate assassination plot in less than ninety seconds.

"You aren't just a janitor, Lucas," Scarlett whispered, her sharp eyes taking in the faded infantry tattoo peeking from beneath his rolled-up collar.

Lucas reached down and picked up his toolbox.

"Seven years ago, I ran logistics and electronic perimeter security for the Third Ranger Battalion in Kandahar, Ms. Vale. Corporate snakes don't look very different from desert insurgents."

Scarlett stepped forward, closing the distance between them until barely a foot of space remained.

"The board convenes in ninety minutes, Lucas," she said, her voice dropping into a desperate, commanding plea.

"Don't leave this floor. Help me tear Julian’s throat out."
