Chapter 6 - A Cornered Snake

"Go on up there, darling," Adrian whispered loudly enough for nearby vice presidents to hear. "I told you I'd make you a star."

Claire stepped toward the stage as if walking toward a guillotine. The steps felt towering. When she reached the stage, Ryan stood tall, holding a commemorative crystal plaque etched with her name and title. His expression was professional, polite, and completely devoid of warmth.

"Congratulations, Ms. Donovan," Ryan said formally through the microphone, handing her the heavy plaque. "You earned every bit of this through your own brilliance. Never let anyone convince you that your success belongs to their shadow."

Claire took the plaque with trembling hands. Her eyes locked with his, brimming with unshed tears of agony and remorse. "Ryan..." she whispered, off-mic, her voice cracking. "Please..."

"That is Chairman Mercer to you, Ms. Donovan," Ryan replied in a quiet, chilling tone that barely carried beyond the podium. "Accept your award and step to the side."

Before Claire could find words, Adrian Cole bounded up the stairs uninvited, a radiant, opportunistic grin plastered across his face. He extended a manicured hand toward Ryan with practiced executive charm.

"Mr. Mercer! An absolute honor, sir," Adrian boomed warmly, projecting his voice. "Adrian Cole, Regional VP of Operations. I've personally overseen Ms. Donovan's professional mentorship over this past quarter. We've worked day and night to align her strategies with the executive committee's high standards. It took a lot of maneuvering with the board, but we brought home the victory."

The entire ballroom fell quiet. Several senior board members in the front row exchanged confused, alarmed glances. Margaret Hale’s eyebrows arched into severe lines of disapproval.

Ryan didn't take Adrian's outstretched hand. He simply lowered his arms, clasping his hands behind his back, staring down at the younger executive with an icy, dissecting gaze.

"You maneuvered with the board, Mr. Cole?" Ryan asked evenly. His voice carried clearly through the lapel microphone.

Adrian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but his brazen arrogance propelled him forward. "Well, yes, sir. In an advisory capacity, of course. Ensuring that high-caliber talent like Claire isn't overlooked by old-school bureaucracy."

"Fascinating," Ryan remarked, his tone dripping with quiet venom. "Because as majority shareholder, Chairman of the Board, and the sole signatory on executive promotions, I don't recall you ever reaching out to me."
