Chapter 1 - The Six-Minute Breakup

Claire Donovan ended a three-year relationship in less than six minutes beneath the flickering fluorescent lights of a neighborhood garage in Columbus, Ohio. The cold evening air swept across the concrete bays, carrying the sharp scent of motor oil, oxidized steel, and exhaust fumes. Ryan Mercer stood with a rag in his hand, the grease embedded deep into the grooves of his calloused fingers. For three long years, Ryan had been the quiet anchor in her storm. He had stayed up late during her flu bouts, paid down an emergency hospital bill when her insurance lapsed, and driven thirty miles out of his way every weekday just to ensure she made her night classes on time.

Yet Claire looked at him now as though he were an obstacle on her highway to glory. Dressed in her sleek corporate blazer and polished black pumps, she seemed completely detached from the dusty garage. She had rehearsed every single line in her sedan, practicing her breathing so her voice wouldn’t quiver.

"I’m going somewhere, Ryan," Claire declared, her chin tilted high. "And I can’t keep apologizing for wanting the person beside me to be going somewhere too."

Ryan stopped wiping his hands. The silence between them was hollow, punctuated only by the faint ticking of a freshly parked engine cooling down in Bay Two. "Going somewhere," he repeated softly.

"You know exactly what I mean," she snapped, defensive against his calm demeanor. "Tomorrow night, I am being officially introduced as the new Director of Strategic Projects at Mercer Automotive Group. At thirty-one years old! I started in the basement mailroom sorting envelopes eight years ago, Ryan. I clawed my way through office politics and brutal deadlines. I’m finally somebody. And you... you’re still wearing the same navy mechanic's coveralls you had on when I first met you."

Ryan leaned against his steel workbench, his face impassive. "Built to settle, is that it?"

"Yes! Exactly!" Claire sighed, tossing her dark hair back. "My life is entering a completely different stratosphere. There will be gala dinners, private investors from Manhattan and Chicago, executive retreats in Aspen. Adrian understands that world. He has genuine influence. He told me he spoke directly with board members to secure my promotion."

Ryan’s eyes narrowed slightly. "He told you that?"

"Why would he lie? He’s a senior vice president, Ryan. He knows how power moves. You don’t." Claire glanced out the bay doors toward a glossy black Mercedes idling across the street. Adrian Cole sat behind the wheel, tapping his fingers against the leather steering wheel, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat. "Adrian can give me a life you can't."

Ryan didn't raise his voice. He didn't smash a wrench. Instead, a deep, quiet sadness settled into his chest. In the locked top drawer of his workbench sat a platinum velvet box containing an emerald-cut diamond ring. Just two weeks ago, Ryan had personally called Margaret Hale, the chief operating officer of Mercer Automotive, urging her to evaluate Claire's portfolio purely on merit, ensuring no corrupt executives sidelined her. Claire had earned the position with her brilliant logistics overhaul, but now she credited a slick corporate parasite who had done nothing.

"You should go, Claire," Ryan said calmly. "Your ride is waiting."

Claire looked momentarily shaken by his cold composure, waiting for him to beg, to plead, or to get angry. When he simply stepped back into the shadows of the workshop, she turned on her heel and strode out into the rain. Ryan watched through the glass as Adrian wrapped an arm around her waist, shooting an arrogant, mocking smirk toward the garage before shutting her door.
