Chapter 4 - The Chairman Returns

The grand double doors swung open, and the entire ballroom fell into a stunned, pin-drop silence. Margaret Hale, the formidable chief operating officer with a reputation for merciless efficiency, stepped into the light. But she wasn’t leading the procession; she walked respectfully half a step behind a tall, broad-shouldered man.

He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal Italian wool suit with a crisp white shirt and a dark silk tie. His hair was impeccably groomed, his jaw cleanly shaved, and his posture commanding. There was an aura of effortless authority around him that caused seasoned corporate veterans to reflexively lower their heads in respect.

Claire looked toward the figure, her breath catching in her throat. Her glass of champagne wobbled precariously in her fingers. The facial structure, the broad shoulders, the steady, unblinking gray eyes—it was impossible.

"No..." she breathed, the word slipping out before she could stop it.

Beside her, Adrian scoffed. "Look at him. Ryan Mercer himself. Worth north of four billion dollars, and he holds sixty percent control of the holding company. If we make the right impression right now, Claire, we’re set for life."

Adrian grabbed her hand and began pulling her forward through the parted crowd. Claire’s legs felt like solid lead. Her heart battered frantically against her ribs. The grease-stained coveralls were gone. The worn steel-toed boots were replaced by hand-buffed leather Oxfords. The man standing on the elevated podium, shaking hands with the board of directors, was Ryan.

*Ryan.* The man she had dumped twenty-four hours earlier in a dusty garage. The man she accused of having no ambition, of being a weight around her ankle, of settling for coffee and grease while she reached for the stars.

"Adrian, wait," Claire stammered in sheer terror, trying to pull her hand back. "We shouldn't... please, let's step back."

"Don't be ridiculous! This is our golden chance!" Adrian hissed under his breath, forcefully dragging her toward the velvet-roped area near the stage.

Ryan Mercer turned his head. His cold, discerning gaze swept across the crowd until it locked dead onto Claire Donovan. For a fraction of a second, Claire saw the ghost of the boy who had loved her, but it vanished instantly, replaced by the chilling, unyielding gaze of an absolute monarch looking upon an errant subject.
