Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Cascades

The tribunal erupted into complete chaos. Pack leaders shouted, drew ceremonial daggers, and snarled as the truth was laid bare before the High Council. Alpha Gregory had violated the most sacred laws of the Lycan Coalition: using human pawns and human financial fraud to steal sacred land from an unsuspecting bloodline.
""Treason!"" Elder Vance roared, slamming his staff down with such force that the marble dais cracked beneath it. ""Alpha Gregory of Portland, by the power of the High Elders, your title is stripped, your pack’s borders are placed under royal stewardship, and you and your daughter will face permanent exile to the northern wastes!""
Gregory's face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated savagery. ""I will not bow to an old man and a human whore!""
In a flash of terrifying violence, Gregory shifted mid-air, his human form bursting into a massive, eight-foot gray wolf with razor-sharp fangs. He lunged directly past Alaric, aiming straight for Helga’s throat.
Screams tore through the hall. Lincoln dove under a table, whimpering like a beaten dog. Hudson drew his silver blade, but Gregory was already airborne, his massive jaws snapping open inches from Helga’s face.
Helga didn't close her eyes. She stood her ground, her ancestral instincts suddenly firing in her blood.
Before Gregory's claws could touch the hem of her gown, a monstrous black blur collided with him mid-stride.
Alaric shifted entirely. The transformation was instantaneous, violent, and majestic. Standing in his place was an enormous, midnight-black wolf with blazing golden eyes, twice the size of Gregory. The sheer aura of royal power rolling off him knocked back the front row of spectators.
With a bone-crushing snap, Alaric’s jaws clamped around Gregory’s throat, slamming the rebel Alpha into the marble floor with enough force to shatter the tiles. Gregory let out a strangled yelp, kicking frantically, but Alaric pinned him effortlessly with one massive, clawed paw, his golden eyes burning down at the traitor.
The message was clear: one more inch of pressure, and the Portland Alpha's life was forfeit.
""Yield!"" Elder Vance commanded, raising his hands. ""Yield, Gregory, or your line ends here!""
Gregory’s wolf whined, lowering his ears and rolling onto his side in absolute submission. The fight was over in less than ten seconds.
Enforcers swarmed forward, slapping enchanted silver shackles around Gregory’s limbs and dragging him and the sobbing Selene out of the grand hall.
The black wolf turned slowly toward Helga. The bloodlust that had filled his golden eyes instantly melted away into something tender, reverent, and protective. He lowered his massive head, stepping close to her, his warm breath stirring the folds of her green silk dress.
Helga didn't flinch. She reached out with both hands and buried her fingers into the thick, dark fur at the nape of his neck. A profound, vibrating purr rumbled deep within his massive chest, a sound that resonated straight into her soul.
""I know what you did,"" she whispered softly, tears finally spilling down her cheeks—not of sorrow, but of awe. ""You protected me.""
Slowly, the wolf stepped back into the shadows of the dais, the dark fur receding as Alaric Crawford reclaimed his human form. Hudson quickly threw a heavy velvet cloak over his shoulders.
Alaric stepped toward Helga, taking her hands in his. ""The land your family owned in the Cascades... it was never ordinary timberland, Helga. Two hundred years ago, a human clan protected the sacred moonstone spring of the Royal Pack during the Great Purge. Your ancestors carried the blessing of our ancestors. The frequency you dialed was an ancient bloodline signal embedded in that land's deed.""

Helga stared up at him, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking into place. ""So it wasn't a typo.""
""No,"" Alaric said, a rare, breathtaking smile touching his lips. ""It was your blood calling home.""
