Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The Maybach rolled through a pair of towering wrought-iron gates hidden deep within the forested hills of Magnolia, winding up a private driveway lined with ancient evergreen trees. At the summit sat the Crawford Estate—a sprawling, modern fortress of glass, steel, and dark cedar, perched precariously over the dark waters of Puget Sound.

Helga was ushered through vast, high-ceilinged corridors where marble floors reflected the soft amber lighting. Servants moved silently in the shadows, bowing their heads respectfully whenever Alaric walked past. None of them looked quite human; they moved with an eerie, coordinated grace, their eyes sharp and vigilant.

""You will stay in the east wing,"" Alaric said, leading her into a magnificent suite with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty bay. A massive king-sized bed dominated the room, layered with plush faux-fur throws and Egyptian cotton. A fire crackled warmly in a floating hearth. ""My personal quarters are through that adjoining door. You are safe here.""

Helga turned to him, clutching the oversized sweatshirt tighter around herself. ""Safe from whom? Lincoln? Or the werewolves Hudson said you just enraged on my behalf?""

Alaric stepped toward her, his tall silhouette blocking the warmth of the fire. The golden glow had faded from his eyes, returning to a cool, enigmatic gray, but the intensity remained. ""Safe from everything. Lincoln will never touch you again. His career is already unraveling as we speak; my auditors discovered three counts of corporate embezzlement in his firm's quarterly filings twenty minutes ago.""

Helga gasped, covering her mouth. ""You ruined him that fast?""

""I merely exposed the truth he was already hiding,"" Alaric countered smoothly. ""As for the Coalition... they will obey my command, or they will challenge me. And none have survived challenging me in two hundred years.""

He reached out, his knuckles lightly brushing against the side of her cheek, catching a stray tear she hadn't realized had fallen. The contact sent another shudder of heat through her body, melting the cold exhaustion that had settled into her bones. ""Sleep, Helga. Tomorrow, your life changes.""

Before she could ask what he meant, he turned and disappeared through the adjoining door, the latch clicking shut with quiet finality.

Helga collapsed onto the bed, physically and emotionally spent. The events of the night seemed entirely surreal. Hours ago, she was crying over a betrayal in a dingy apartment; now, she was trapped in an opulent mansion owned by a mythical monarch who claimed she was his fated partner. She expected to lie awake, haunted by Lincoln’s smug face and Jessica’s treacherous smile, but the moment her head sank into the down pillow, a deep, hypnotic exhaustion pulled her under.

Hours later, she was ripped from sleep by a piercing crash of shattering glass.

Helga bolted upright, the blankets pooling around her waist. The fire had died down to glowing embers, casting long, menacing shadows across the bedroom. The air in the room was suddenly freezing cold.

Standing near the shattered balcony doors was a woman. She was strikingly beautiful, with platinum blonde hair, porcelain skin, and eyes that glowed an icy, venomous blue. She wore a skin-tight leather jacket spattered with rain, and in her right hand, she held a curved silver hunting dagger.

""So,"" the woman hissed, her voice dripping with venomous disdain as she stepped over the shards of glass. ""This is the pathetic human stray Alaric abandoned our treaty for.""

Helga scrambled toward the opposite side of the bed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. ""Who are you?""

""I am Lady Selene of the Portland Pack,"" the woman sneered, raising the blade. ""The rightful Queen of the Northwest. And you, little girl, are about to become a tragic hunting accident.""
