Chapter 1 - The Stranger on the Threshold

The rain poured harder against the high brick facade of the building, washing down the worn brickwork in glossy sheets. Helga blinked, the lingering fog of cheap wine fighting against a sudden, bone-chilling wave of adrenaline. This was not Lincoln. Lincoln slouched. Lincoln wore tailored shirts that were slightly wrinkled around the collar and smelled faintly of expensive cologne bought to hide cigarette smoke.

The man standing before her did not slouch. He was towering, broad-shouldered enough to block out the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway, wearing a bespoke charcoal wool coat that looked impervious to water. Droplets hung in his dark, swept-back hair like liquid glass. But it was his face that made the breath stick in her throat—sharp cheekbones, a jaw cut from granite, and eyes that held the unnerving depth of storm clouds over open water. And for a fleeting fraction of a second, when his gaze swept over her tear-streaked face and oversized gray sweatshirt, those irises had flickered with molten gold.

""You aren't Lincoln,"" Helga whispered, taking an instinctive half-step backward. Her bare foot touched the cold linoleum floor. Her hand gripped the brass doorknob, knuckles turning white as she prepared to slam it shut.

""I told you that twice,"" the man replied. His voice was a rich, low rumble that seemed to reverberate directly inside her chest, carrying a heavy, ancient weight that made the fine hairs on her arms stand up. He did not lunge or force his way forward; he merely stood in the doorway, exuding an effortless, terrifying authority that held her pinned where she stood. ""You also sent me your live location and invited me to say it to your face.""

Helga felt the blood rush into her cheeks, a searing mix of humiliation and rising panic. ""That was... I thought you were playing games. I thought you were my ex.""

""Evidently,"" he said, his gaze dropping to the floor beside her. He noticed the overturned carton of cold noodles on the faded rug, the empty wine bottle sitting carelessly on the coffee table, and the packed overnight bag slumping beside the sofa. A faint muscle ticked in his sharp jaw. ""You are reckless, Helga Stewart.""

Her heart skipped violently. The room suddenly felt smaller, airless. ""How do you know my name? I never told you my name.""

""Your phone number is tied to public records, and my associates are exceptionally thorough when I am summoned to an unfamiliar corner of Capitol Hill at midnight,"" he answered calmly, reaching into his inner coat pocket. Helga tensed, expecting a weapon or a badge, but he merely withdrew a thin, matte-black smartphone. He tapped the glass once, displaying the screen to her.

There it was: her exact text message, along with the bright blue location pin she had sent in a fit of drunken spite. Beside it, the contact header read: Private Line 01.

""My name is Alaric Crawford,"" he said, his storm-colored eyes locking back onto hers with an intensity that made her knees feel weak. ""And while I rarely answer unsolicited messages, you made an accusation of cowardice that intrigued me.""

Helga swallowed hard, trying to reconcile the absurd reality of the moment. She had spent the last four hours agonizing over a pathetic, cheating boyfriend, only to accidentally summon a six-foot-four billionaire who looked like he owned half the West Coast.

""Well, Mr. Crawford,"" she managed, lifting her chin to muster whatever shattered dignity she had left, ""as you can see, I am not the Queen of England, and this was an enormous mistake. You can leave now.""

Alaric stepped forward. He didn't enter the apartment, but his sheer presence crossed the threshold like a physical wave of heat. The faint scent of cedarwood, winter rain, and ozone drifted toward her, intoxicating and dizzying.

May you like

""I could,"" Alaric murmured, his eyes darkening to slate. ""Except the man you were looking for just pulled up outside this building, accompanied by the woman whose coat you recognized. And from the way he was screaming your name into his phone downstairs, I doubt he intends to let you sleep tonight.""

Before Helga could process the words, a loud, aggressive shout echoed from the stairwell below, followed by the heavy thud of rapid footsteps taking the steps two at a time. Lincoln had arrived.
