Chapter 5 - The Midnight Warning

The gala descended into utter chaos for Julian Vance. Within forty-five minutes of Christine’s public financial dismantling, three major investment syndicates had pulled their funding from Vance’s upcoming commercial port project. Vance had slipped out through a side exit, hounded by persistent reporters and furious bank executives demanding immediate debt audits.

By midnight, the heavy rain had returned, drumming a hypnotic rhythm against the tinted windows of Dante’s armored Maybach as it glided through the neon-drenched city streets.

Inside the quiet cabin of the car, the air between Christine and Dante was thick with unresolved tension. Christine leaned her head against the leather seat, kicking off her heels with a soft sigh of exhaustion.

“You completely eviscerated him,” Dante said, his voice low and vibrating through the quiet space. He was sitting close to her, his jacket unbuttoned, bowtie untied and draped loosely around his collar.

“He insulted my profession,” Christine replied, glancing over at him with a tired smile. “You never pick a fight with someone who buys their spreadsheets in bulk.”

“I’m serious, Christine,” Dante murmured, shifting his body toward hers. His hand reached out, brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her cheek, his fingers lingering on the soft curve of her neck. “I’ve spent ten years fighting Vance with lawyers, muscle, and territorial pressure. You took him down in three minutes using nothing but public filings and pure nerve.”

Christine’s breath hitched at the warmth of his touch. Up close, the fierce mob prince looked remarkably vulnerable. The cold, untouchable mask he wore for the world had slipped away, leaving only raw intensity.

“I just did my job, Dante,” she whispered, her heart accelerating.

“No,” Dante said softly, leaning closer until his lips were barely an inch from hers. “You did something else entirely. You made me respect you. And right now, Christine, that’s becoming very dangerous for me.”

Before she could answer, his lips met hers.

The kiss was hungry, urgent, and filled with the kind of fierce possession that made the entire world outside vanish. Christine gasped into his mouth, her fingers tangling into the thick, dark hair at the back of his neck. Dante groaned softly, pulling her closer against his chest, his large hands gripping her waist with undeniable passion. For a moment, the ledgers, the bullets, and the danger ceased to exist. There was only the heat of his skin, the taste of vintage scotch, and the intoxicating sensation of being held by a man who could destroy an army but touched her like she was irreplaceable.

Suddenly, a deafening screech of tires shattered the night.

The Maybach was violently violently slammed from the side. The impact sent the heavy vehicle skidding across the slick asphalt, spinning out before crashing into a concrete light pole. Metal shrieked, glass shattered, and the cabin was filled with the acrid smell of burnt rubber and deployed side airbags.

Dante immediately shielded Christine’s body with his own, taking the brunt of the kinetic shock against his back and shoulders.

“Christine! Are you hurt?” Dante barked, coughing through the haze, his hands frantically checking her face, neck, and arms for injuries.

“I’m okay... I’m okay,” she choked out, bruised but intact.

Outside, headlights flooded the wreckage. Two black SUVs had boxed the Maybach against the retaining wall. Several men in ski masks armed with submachine guns poured out into the pouring rain.

Dante reached beneath the driver’s partition, retrieving a sleek black tactical pistol. His eyes were burning with terrifying wrath.

“Stay down on the floorboards,” he ordered, his voice dropping into absolute ice. “Don't move until I tell you.”

“Dante, wait—”

Dante kicked the damaged passenger door open into the storm, firing three precision shots through the darkness. Muzzle flashes lit up the night as screams echoed through the alley. Dante moved with lethal efficiency, using the heavy chassis of the armored vehicle as cover while returning fire against the ambushers. Christine crouched low, clutching her phone to dial emergency channels, but before the call connected, the rear glass shattered.

A gloved hand reached through the broken window, tossing a heavy, smoking canister into the back seat.

Tear gas and smoke instantly filled the cabin. Christine coughed violently, her vision blurring as tears streamed down her face. A heavy hand grabbed her by the collar of her dress, dragging her out through the smashed window into the torrential rain.

“Dante!” she screamed, struggling fiercely, driving her heel into the attacker's knee.

A man grunted in pain, but another attacker struck her across the temple with the butt of a weapon. The world spun violently. As darkness rushed in to swallow her consciousness, the last thing Christine saw through the rain was Dante screaming her name, sprinting toward her through a barrage of gunfire, his face twisted in absolute anguish.
