Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ledger

One year later.

The afternoon sun poured over the rolling green vineyards of the Moretti Estate in Sonoma Valley, casting a golden glow over fifty guests gathered around a massive outdoor banquet table. The air was filled with laughter, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the rich aroma of handmade pasta and roasted figs.

At the head of the table sat Dante and Christine Moretti.

Christine looked radiant in a flowing cream sundress, her wedding band sparkling alongside her emerald engagement ring. Her hair fell in soft, dark waves over her bare shoulders, and her smile was completely free of the guarded tension that had once defined her life in Boise.

Dante sat beside her, his arm draped comfortably over the back of her chair. He was wearing an open-collared white linen shirt, laughing heartily as Aaron—now the Senior Vice President of Internal Audit for Moretti Global Hospitality—nervously toasted the couple with an expensive vintage Brunello.

“To Christine and Dante,” Aaron announced, raising his glass with mock gravity. “The only couple in corporate history who fell in love over a six-hundred-thousand-dollar forensic deficit. May their love be as balanced as their ledgers, and may Christine never call any of us raccoons ever again!”

The guests erupted in laughter and cheers. Dante shook his head with a grin, raising his glass in acknowledgment before turning his gaze toward his wife.

Under Christine’s relentless leadership over the past twelve months, Moretti Global had completed its transformation into one of the country's most respected ethical development conglomerates. Julian Vance had been sentenced to twenty-five years without parole, Marco had accepted a plea bargain that stripped him of all assets, and the old syndicate rumors had been completely overwritten by record-breaking charitable foundations and community housing projects.

Christine had not made herself smaller.

She had made the empire expand to fit her standards.

As the sun began to dip beneath the vineyard hills, painting the sky in vibrant shades of magenta and gold, Dante leaned down, whispering in Christine’s ear. “Are you bored of the speeches yet?”

“Exhausted,” Christine confessed with a soft chuckle. “Aaron’s financial metaphors are getting worse by the hour.”

“Come with me,” Dante said, taking her hand.

They slipped away from the party, strolling hand-in-hand down the gravel pathway between the lush rows of grapevines. The evening breeze was cool and fragrant with the scent of wild rosemary and ripe fruit. When they reached the stone terrace overlooking the valley, Dante pulled Christine into his arms, resting his forehead against hers.

“Are you happy, Christine?” he asked softly, searching her eyes. “Do you ever miss the quiet life in Boise?”

Christine smiled, running her fingers gently along the faded scar on his temple, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his linen shirt.

“I used to think a quiet life was the same thing as a safe life,” she murmured, looking out over the golden hills of their home. “I spent years balancing other people’s chaos because I was terrified of making a mess of my own. But with you, Dante... I found something worth fighting for. Something that actually adds up.”

Dante smiled, that rare, breathtaking smile that reached all the way to his dark eyes, and pulled her close against his chest.

“No more missing funds,” Dante promised softly against her lips. “No more hidden accounts. Just an open ledger, forever.”

“Good,” Christine whispered, kissing him deeply as the California sunset enveloped them in warmth. “Because you’re still entirely billable, Mr. Moretti. And I intend to keep you on retainer for the rest of my life.”"
