Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

The morning sun broke through the heavy fog over the river, casting a gray, metallic sheen across the high-rise glass of the Moretti Holdings corporate tower. Inside the 40th-floor boardroom, the tension was thick enough to choke on.
Twelve senior executives sat around a massive marble conference table, whispering among themselves as armed private guards stood silently at every exit. At the head of the table sat Dante, looking regal and ruthless in a charcoal three-piece suit. To his immediate right, Christine sat with her laptop open, wearing an ivory blouse, berry lipstick, and a cool, unreadable expression.
Marco Moretti, Dante’s cousin and the vice president of acquisitions, was sweating profusely through his designer linen shirt.
“Dante, what is the meaning of this?” Marco demanded, slamming his palm onto the marble. “You lock down the executive floor, post armed security at the elevators, and bring in this... this small-town bean counter to lecture us? We have a multi-million-dollar merger with Vance Holdings to finalize today! This is an insult to the family!”
Dante didn't even blink. He took a slow sip of black espresso from a porcelain cup, set it down without making a sound, and gestured casually toward Christine.
“Ms. Cole,” Dante said smoothly. “Educate my cousin.”
Christine stood up, clicking her wireless presenter. The massive projection screen behind Dante flickered to life, displaying a devastating web of bank routing numbers, shell companies, and falsified invoices.
“Between March of last year and yesterday evening, exactly seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars was drained from the Moretti logistics reserve fund,” Christine announced, her voice echoing crisp and authoritative through the room. “It was categorized as miscellaneous vendor overages and routine equipment depreciation. But when you cross-reference the transfer timestamps with the corporate VPN gateway, every single transaction occurred during off-hours from an IP address assigned exclusively to the Vice President’s office.”
Marco’s face drained of color. “That’s absurd! Anyone could spoof my IP address! You’re taking the word of an outsider over your own blood, Dante?”
“I don't rely on IP addresses, Mr. Moretti,” Christine interrupted smoothly, advancing the slide to reveal a series of scanned wire transfers bearing a physical signature. “I rely on the dual-signature clearinghouse records. You used your digital cryptographic key, which requires biometric authentication via your company smartphone. Unless someone chopped off your thumb while you were sleeping, you authorized every single dollar.”
Murmurs of shock rippled through the executive board. Several board members pushed their chairs back, distancing themselves from Marco as if he were radioactive.
“You set up Apex Logistics,” Christine continued relentlessly. “You took kickbacks from Julian Vance to artificially depress Moretti Holdings' stock valuation so Vance could initiate a hostile takeover at half the market price. In exchange, Vance promised you a thirty-percent ownership stake in the consolidated company.”
“Shut up!” Marco screamed, lunging to his feet, knocking his leather chair over. “You arrogant little bitch, you don't know who you’re dealing with!”
Before Marco could take two steps toward Christine, Dante was on his feet.
The movement was so fast it was almost imperceptible. Dante grabbed Marco by the throat, hoisting him backward over the table until Marco’s back hit the marble with a thunderous crash. The entire room went dead silent. Dante leaned down, his eyes burning with cold fury.
“You insult her again, Marco, and you won’t leave this room walking,” Dante whispered. The icy calm in his voice was far more terrifying than any shout. “Did you really think I wouldn't notice? Did you think I was blind to your greed?”
“Dante... please... Vance will crush you...” Marco wheezed, his fingers clawing desperately at Dante’s iron grip. “He has the banks... he has the city council...”
“Vance has nothing,” Dante said coldly. He released his grip, allowing Marco to collapse onto the floor, coughing violently. Dante turned to his head of security. “Take him to the holding facility downtown. Hand him over to the federal authorities along with Ms. Cole’s forensic dossier. Every asset under his name is frozen as of right now.”
The guards dragged Marco kicking and screaming out of the boardroom. The remaining executives sat frozen in terror, terrified to breathe.
Dante straightened his cuffs, looked around the table, and said softly, “Meeting adjourned.”
As the room cleared out in frantic haste, Christine began packing her documents into her leather briefcase. She felt Dante approach from behind, stopping just close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him.
“You dismantled a corporate coup in less than twenty minutes,” Dante said, his voice softer now, tinged with genuine admiration.
“I told you,” Christine replied, snapping her briefcase shut and looking up into his dark eyes. “Numbers don’t lie. People do.”
Dante reached out, his hand brushing gently against her jawline, lingering for just a fraction of a second before pulling back. “Julian Vance won't take this defeat quietly, Christine. He knows who uncovered his scheme. You’re in danger as long as you stay in this city alone.”

“I have a return ticket to Boise tonight,” she said, her voice dropping an octave under his intense gaze.
“Cancel it,” Dante commanded softly. “Because as of this morning, Christine Cole, you are under my personal protection. And I don’t let anyone touch what belongs in my circle.”
