Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

By 3:00 p.m., the command floor had been completely sanitized. The traitors were gone, the network was bulletproof, and the remaining engineers moved around the room with hushed reverence whenever they passed Norah’s desk.
Damian escorted Norah up the private executive elevator to the top-floor penthouse suite.
The heavy oak doors opened to reveal a luxurious, sun-drenched sanctuary of marble and velvet. Sitting on a plush leather sofa, eating a massive bowl of fresh strawberries and chocolate ice cream, was Lily. Standing guard beside her, wearing an apron over his tactical holster while holding a tiny tea cup between his massive, calloused fingers, was Marcus.
""Mommy!"" Lily shrieked, dropping her spoon and throwing herself across the sofa into Norah’s open arms.
Norah caught her daughter tightly, burying her face in Lily’s soft hair, the tears she had held back for two days finally spilling down her cheeks. ""Oh, baby... I missed you so much.""
""Mr. Marcus made me tea!"" Lily giggled, pointing at the terrifying bodyguard, whose face turned beet-red. ""And he said you were a superhero who saved the whole city!""
""She is, little one,"" Damian said softly, stepping into the room.
Lily looked up at the mob boss, her little hand reaching into her pocket to pull out the faded rag doll. She walked over to him and held it out. ""You don't look sad anymore, Mr. Boss.""
Damian crouched down until he was at eye level with the child. He gently accepted the doll, holding it with the utmost care, as if it were worth more than all the gold in Zurich. ""That's because your mother fixed everything I broke, Lily. She is the strongest person I have ever met.""
He stood up, handing the doll back to Lily, and turned to Norah. He gestured toward a private conference table where a thick stack of legal documents lay waiting.
""We need to discuss your compensation,"" Damian said formally.
Norah stiffened slightly, stepping protectively in front of Lily. ""I don't want blood money, Damian. I just want what was promised: security for my daughter, my clearance cleared, and a clean severance so we can leave Chicago.""
""Leave?"" Damian’s voice carried a sudden, sharp edge of panic that he quickly smoothed away. He walked over to the table and picked up the documents.
""I am not offering you a severance, Norah. And I am not offering you blood money,"" Damian said, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. ""These are the corporate founding charters for a newly established cybersecurity firm, Whitman Technology Defense. It is a completely legitimate, publicly traded enterprise.""
Norah blinked, stunned. ""What?""
""I have funded the treasury with fifty million dollars from the Moretti accounts you seized,"" Damian continued, sliding the papers toward her. ""You own fifty-one percent of the voting shares. You are the Chief Executive Officer. You answer to no one—not to Malcolm, not to my captains, and not to me. My organization will merely be your first private client, paying a twenty-million-dollar annual retainer for your architecture services.""
Norah looked at the contract, her vision blurring. ""Damian... this is absurd. This is too much.""
""It is not nearly enough,"" Damian replied, stepping closer, his voice dropping into an intimate whisper. ""You worked until your body collapsed because you cared about the integrity of what you built. I humiliated you. I threw you away when I should have protected you. This isn't just compensation, Norah. It is my penance. You and your daughter will never worry about a bill, a rent payment, or safety ever again. You will have full executive transport, twenty-four-hour private security, and the respect you earned with your own blood.""
Norah stared at the documents, then at the powerful man standing before her, looking at her not as an underworld tyrant, but as a man who recognized her absolute worth.
""I have conditions,"" Norah said, lifting her chin with newfound authority.
Damian smiled faintly. ""Name them.""
""Frank Mercer is demoted. Ethan Cole takes his place as shift supervisor with triple his current salary. He was the only one who listened to me.""
""Done,"" Damian agreed without a second's hesitation.
""And you never step into my server room and question my exhaustion again,"" she added, her eyes flashing with a touch of wit. ""If I say the system is under attack, you listen.""
May you like
Damian bowed his head respectfully. ""From this day forward, Norah, your word is law.""
