Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Traitor

Norah didn't hesitate. She marched directly to the central terminal, sweeping aside the scattered paper and cold coffee cups with a single swipe of her arm. She dropped into the ergonomic chair that had been hers for three years, cracked her knuckles, and plugged a customized flash drive into the primary console port.

""Ethan!"" she barked.

Ethan Cole bolted across the floor, his face lit with sudden, wild hope. ""I'm here, Norah! Tell me what to do!""

""Open the physical chassis on Rack 04-Delta,"" Norah commanded without looking up from the monitor. ""Locate the third microcontroller on the liquid cooling manifold. Strip the jumpers off pins five and eight. That forces the fan microcontroller into diagnostic mode and flushes the ghost partition into the local serial bus!""

""On it!"" Ethan shouted, sprinting across the raised floor toward the glass-enclosed server room.

Victor Hail stepped forward, his voice rising in manufactured panic. ""Mr. Russo, this is insane! She is bypassing all our safety protocols! If she short-circuits the cooling bus, the processors will melt! She is sabotaging whatever records we have left to cover her own tracks!""

Damian didn't even look at Victor. He stood directly behind Norah, his arms crossed, a towering, lethal presence guarding her back. ""Keep working, Norah.""

""Jumpers pulled!"" Ethan’s voice crackled through the intercom from inside the server room.

Norah’s fingers danced across the keyboard like an impossible storm. On the central twenty-foot monitor, the mocking digital skull flickered violently. Lines of corrupted hexadecimal code began snapping back into ordered, glowing green text strings.

EXTRACTING GHOST FRAGMENT 01... SUCCESS.

EXTRACTING GHOST FRAGMENT 02... SUCCESS.

EXTRACTING GHOST FRAGMENT 03... SUCCESS.

""Master encryption keys restored,"" Norah whispered, a triumphant smirk tugging at her lips. ""Re-injecting the root authentication certificates now. The wiping protocol has halted at eleven minutes remaining.""

A collective gasp echoed across the floor. The countdown timer froze at 11:04. Then, with a massive digital cascade, the crimson warning lights on the main screen flipped back to deep, stable sapphire blue. The transaction queues began processing, moving twenty thousand delayed transfers through Zurich and Singapore in a frantic, beautiful wave of restored liquidity.

Frank Mercer slumped into a chair, rubbing his trembling hands over his face in sheer relief. The four hundred and twenty million dollars was safely flowing back into the syndicate’s offshore vaults.

""Now,"" Norah said, her voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register that made the entire room turn cold. ""Let's see who held the door open for the wolf.""

She opened the deep system event logs—the ones that had been preserved within her active-memory buffer before the reboot.

""The malware required three separate administrative override keys to bypass our perimeter firewall,"" Norah said slowly, spinning her chair around to face the command deck. ""The first key was stolen from an engineer who left the company eight months ago. The second key was generated via a spoofed terminal in Frankfurt.""

She tapped a final key with deliberate force. A massive system audit log mirrored across the central screen, displaying a unique hardware MAC address and an internal employee login credential.

OVERRIDE KEY 03 AUTHORIZED BY: HAIL, VICTOR - 03:14 A.M.

The entire command center turned to look at Victor Hail.

Victor’s eyes darted frantically toward the exit doors. ""That's... that's a fabrication! She forged the log! She’s framing me because I agreed with Mr. Russo when he dismissed her!""

""You didn't just authorize the payload, Victor,"" Norah said coldly, standing up from her desk and walking toward him. ""You refused my escalation warnings twice because you were on a timeline. The offshore buyers who paid you were waiting for the European market opening. You needed the system to crash while I was on shift so I would take the blame. And when Damian walked in and saw me asleep, you thought your plan was perfect.""

Damian slowly turned toward Victor. The temperature in the underground bunker seemed to plummet below freezing. Damian’s hands remained casually tucked into his pockets, but the sheer, murderous weight of his aura made Victor drop to his knees, shaking uncontrollably.

""Who paid you, Victor?"" Damian asked, his voice so quiet it sounded like a razor slicing through silk.

""Damian, please!"" Victor begged, tears of pure terror spilling down his cheeks. ""The Moretti family... they offered me ten million dollars and safe passage to Brazil! They said your empire was outdated, that you were vulnerable! They threatened my family!""

Damian sighed softly, looking down at the groveling man with profound disgust. He signaled to the two armed bodyguards standing at the perimeter.

""Take him to the basement of the shipping docks,"" Damian ordered calmly. ""Strip him of everything he owns. He will answer every question Marcus asks him. And when he is finished answering, ensure he never sees the sky again.""

""No! Damian, please! Norah, tell him! Please!"" Victor screamed as the two massive guards hauled him to his feet and dragged him violently through the heavy security doors, his desperate cries echoing down the corridor until the airlock snapped shut.

Damian turned back to Norah. The entire room of engineers, supervisors, and guards watched in breathless silence.
