Chapter 5 - Race Against the Clock

The convoy of four heavily armored black Suburbans tore through the streets of downtown Chicago at breakneck speed, their emergency strobes flashing as they ignored red lights and blew through morning traffic behind an aggressive tactical escort.
Inside the rear passenger cabin of the lead vehicle, Damian Russo sat opposite Norah Whitman. Lily was curled up beside her mother, fast asleep against Norah’s hip, shielded from the chaos by Damian’s own thick cashmere coat, which he had draped over the child without a word.
Norah had Damian’s ruggedized field terminal balanced on her lap, her fingers flying across the mechanical keys in a blinding blur of raw, instinctive velocity. The soft click-clack of keystrokes filled the cabin, punctuated only by Damian’s tense, quiet breathing.
""What are you seeing?"" Damian asked, leaning forward, his eyes glued to the cascading lines of green and white code reflected in Norah’s glasses.
""It’s worse than I thought,"" Norah muttered, her voice cold, analytical, and laser-focused. The exhaustion that had nearly crippled her hours earlier was completely overridden by the ferocious, single-minded brilliance that had made her the syndicate’s chief architect. ""The malware didn't just execute on boot. It released a poly-morphic encryption lock into the root kernel. It’s systematically overwriting the transaction ledger with junk data every sixty seconds.""
""Can you decrypt it?""
""Nobody can decrypt it through brute force, Damian,"" she shot back sharply. ""It uses a 4096-bit asymmetric cipher. It would take a supercomputer three hundred years to crack it.""
""Then we're finished?""
Norah’s fingers paused over the keyboard for half a second. A fierce, predatory grin flashed across her tired face. ""I didn't say that. The attackers are smart, but they're arrogant. They assumed the volatile RAM buffer I built was just a patch. They didn't realize that before my clearance was revoked, I routed the master cryptographic seeds through a mirrored ghost partition tucked inside the peripheral cooling controller.""
Damian blinked, astonished. ""The cooling controller?""
""Nobody ever audits the environmental hardware firmware,"" Norah said coldly. ""I knew someone with administrative privileges was feeding the attackers backdoor keys. I couldn't trust the primary storage arrays. So I split the authentication seed into three fragmented strings and hid them inside the fan speed logic circuits. But to extract them, I need physical access to the server rack inside the bunker. I cannot do it remotely.""
Damian tapped the partition glass dividing the cabin from the driver. ""Clear the tunnels! I want the Loop subterranean gates blown open right now!""
Seven minutes later, the convoy screeched down the concrete ramp into the subterranean parking facility beneath Chicago’s financial district. The heavy steel blast doors parted with a mechanical groan. Damian jumped out the moment the vehicle stopped, extending his hand to Norah.
She stepped out, lifting Lily gently into her arms. Damian signaled to Marcus, his most trusted personal bodyguard, a man who had stood at Damian’s side through three mob wars.
""Marcus,"" Damian commanded, his voice brooking no argument. ""Take two men. You guard this little girl in my private executive suite with your life. If anyone approaches that door without my direct verbal authorization, shoot to kill.""
Marcus nodded grimly, stepping forward and gently taking Lily, who remained blissfully asleep against the large man’s shoulder.
Norah turned to Damian, her eyes burning with pure, unyielding resolve. ""Twenty-one minutes until the purge completes. Let's go take back your empire.""
They marched into the main operations center side by side.
The moment the glass doors hissed open, the frantic noise of shouting engineers instantly died. Frank Mercer dropped his clipboard. The technicians frozen at their terminals stared in disbelief. Standing beside Damian Russo, looking like an avenging angel in a threadbare sweater, was the chief engineer they had watched security escort out in disgrace just four hours prior.
Victor Hail stood near the central platform, his face draining of all color until he looked like a walking corpse.
""Mr. Russo..."" Victor stammered, stepping backward against a support pillar. ""You... you brought her back?""
""Shut your mouth, Victor,"" Damian growled, his voice sending a violent shiver through every person in the room. He stepped onto the elevated platform and pointed at the master console.

""Norah Whitman has absolute executive command of this entire facility,"" Damian announced, his voice booming like thunder over the server hum. ""Anyone who questions her, delays her, or fails to execute her orders instantly will be treated as an enemy of this organization. Norah, take your chair.""
