Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

By the following Monday, the news of Jimmy Silva’s sudden retirement had rippled through the underworld grapevine.

Inside the private backroom of an Italian bakery in Astoria, Queens, Salvatore Moretti slammed a crystal glass onto the butcher-block table.

Salvatore was fifty-five, thick-necked, with ruthless ambitions to seize control of the Hudson shipping channels before the winter freeze.

Across from him sat Richard Collins, Maya’s deadbeat ex-husband, looking disheveled, greasy, and shaking with nervous energy.

"What do you mean Russo paid the debt?!" Salvatore roared, glaring at Richard like he was a cockroach.

"I don't know, Sal!" Richard stammered, raising his trembling hands. "Jimmy called me from a bus station in Ohio and told me never to go back to Yonkers!"

"He said Gabriel Russo personally bought my paper and warned everyone to stay away from Maya!"

Salvatore stroked his stubbled chin, his cold eyes narrowing as a wicked, opportunistic plan began to take shape in his mind.

"Russo has lived like a monk in that Cold Spring fortress for a decade," Salvatore muttered, pacing the floor.

"He has no wife, no kids, no visible weaknesses. Every time we tried to hit his supply lines, his security was impenetrable."

"And now he's harboring a runaway maid and her two brats in his private estate?"

"Maya is a nobody, Sal!" Richard insisted, desperate to avoid getting his legs broken for the unpaid balance. "She's just a cleaning girl!"

"She's not a nobody if Gabriel Russo is paying fifty grand to keep her safe," Salvatore countered, a sinister grin spreading across his face.

"If Russo cares about that woman and those kids, he just handed us the leverage we've been hunting for three years."

Salvatore turned to his chief enforcer standing by the door.

"Assemble twelve men from the Brooklyn crew. We're going to pay a visit to Mr. Russo's countryside sanctuary."

Meanwhile, forty miles north in Cold Spring, the atmosphere inside the Russo estate had transformed completely.

The solarium, once abandoned and covered in dust sheets, had been completely cleared of dead foliage and polished until the glass gleamed.

New leather couches, low play tables, and vibrant green ferns filled the sun-drenched space.

Leo was sitting on the rug building an elaborate wooden castle with Victor Rossi, who had surprisingly proved to be an expert in toy architecture.

Khloe was running around the perimeter in a brand-new yellow sundress, holding a fresh sheet of dinosaur stickers Maria had bought for her in town.

Maya walked into Gabriel’s private study, carrying a silver tray with hot black coffee and fresh biscotti.

She wore an elegant cashmere sweater and tailored trousers Gabriel had insisted on purchasing for her, her posture radiating a newfound confidence.

"You didn't have to redecorate the solarium, Gabriel," Maya said, setting the tray on his desk with a warm smile.

"My mother loved that room," Gabriel said, looking up from his shipping logs. "It was meant to be filled with light and laughter, not dust."

He reached across the desk, his fingers gently brushing against hers as he took the coffee cup.

"You belong here, Maya. All three of you."

Before Maya could reply, the compound's perimeter alarm erupted into a deafening, pulsing siren.
