Chapter 1 - The Shattered Bottle on the Marble

The sharp crash of the plastic bottle striking the polished marble floor echoed through the vast, vaulted corridor of the solarium.

A puddle of blue liquid spread rapidly between Gabriel Russo’s handcrafted leather shoes and the frayed canvas sneakers of the trembling woman.

Maya Collins stood with both arms outstretched, her entire body shaking like a leaf caught in an autumn gale, physically placing herself between the barrel of a customized firearm and her two young children.

"Please don't hurt them!" Maya gasped, her voice choking on raw, unadulterated terror. "Please! Take whatever I have, take my wages, take my life, but don't touch my babies!"

Gabriel did not move a single muscle.

Standing six feet two inches tall, with silver streaks running through his dark hair and an unyielding jawline that had sent seasoned mobsters to their knees, he looked down at the scene.

In his right hand, the heavy black frame of his pistol caught the gray daylight filtering through the dust-streaked glass roof.

He slowly lowered the muzzle toward the ground, engaging the thumb safety with a quiet, metallic click that sounded like thunder in the dead silence.

Behind Maya’s frail frame, little Khloe scrambled up from the rug, clutching her clear plastic container in both hands.

"Mama, don't yell," Khloe said innocently, her wide hazel eyes darting between her frantic mother and the towering stranger. "The giant man is quiet. He didn't wake up Leo."

Leo stirred on the sofa beneath the white linen dust sheet, groaning as the headphones slipped off his ears and landed on the floorboards.

The six-year-old sat up, rubbing his sleepy eyes, his gaze locking onto Gabriel’s tailored dark suit and the weapon held at his hip.

Fear immediately seized the boy’s small features, but rather than crying, he scrambled to his mother’s side, tugging hard at the hem of her gray uniform.

"Who authorized you to bring civilians into this wing?" Gabriel asked, his deep baritone rumbling through the room with frigid composure.

He didn't raise his voice, yet the authority behind his words seemed to drain all the oxygen from the air.

"Nobody, sir," Maya sobbed, dropping to her knees on the cold floor, keeping her hands visible in front of her. "I work for Elite Estates. My babysitter got sick this morning, and if I missed my shift, I was going to be fired. I had nowhere else to leave them."

Gabriel stared at the woman kneeling in front of him.

Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, hurried ponytail, dark circles bruised the delicate skin beneath her eyes, and her knuckles were red and raw from hours of harsh scrubbing detergents.

She was young, twenty-eight at most, yet the exhaustion etched into her posture belonged to someone who had been carrying the weight of an entire world alone.

"You brought two unauthorized individuals past my outer gates," Gabriel said coldly, glancing toward the arched double doors where heavy footsteps were already hurrying down the gallery.

"Do you have any concept of what kind of house you walked into?"

May you like

"I just needed to finish my shift, sir," Maya wept, her forehead almost touching the wet marble where the cleaner pooled. "I need the money for today. If I don't pay Jimmy by tonight, he's going to come to my apartment."

Before Gabriel could ask who Jimmy was, Victor Rossi rounded the corner into the solarium, his tactical weapon drawn and four armed estate guards trailing close behind him.
