Chapter 9 - The Healer's Touch

Two days later, the storm had passed, leaving Chicago bathed in crisp, golden winter sunshine. The sprawling Moretti estate in Highland Park was bathed in quiet peace, surrounded by private security teams loyal only to Alessandro.

Isabella sat on an oversized velvet sofa in front of a roaring stone fireplace, a warm cashmere blanket draped over her lap. Her sprained ankle was neatly bandaged, and beside her, nestled safely in a custom-built mahogany bassinet lined with organic silk, Sophie slept peacefully, a tiny silver rattle resting by her fingers.

The door clicked open, and Alessandro walked in. He had discarded his formal business attire, wearing a simple dark cashmere sweater and trousers. The hard, untouchable mafia boss had completely softened; the exhaustion of the past forty-eight hours showed in the faint lines around his eyes, but his gaze was warm and entirely at peace.

"The federal warrants were executed this morning," Alessandro said quietly, walking over and sitting on the edge of the coffee table across from her. "Castillo and every corrupt politician on Dominic’s payroll are in custody. The council held an emergency vote at dawn. They acknowledged Sophie as the legitimate Moretti heir and signed an unconditional non-aggression pact. It's over, Isabella. The war is finished."

Isabella touched the soft woolen blanket, feeling the safety and comfort of the room. "And you? Are you done fighting, Alessandro?"

Alessandro reached into his pocket and placed the sapphire pendant on the table between them. "I handed over the street logistics to Marco and converted all family assets into legitimate real estate, green energy shipping, and maritime trusts. My brother died because of that criminal empire. I almost lost you and Sophie because of it. I'm stepping down as Don. I’m just an investor now. And, if you’ll let me... a full-time father."

Tears pricked Isabella’s eyes, but this time they were tears of profound relief. "You gave up an entire empire for us?"

"An empire is just dust and stone, Isabella," he murmured, leaning forward to gently take her hand in his. His skin was warm, his touch remarkably tender for a man who had commanded armies. "You and Sophie are the only things in this world that are truly real to me."
