Chapter 1 - The Trap Behind The Chandelier

The music from the grand ballroom seeped through the thick mahogany doors like the pulse of a predator. Alessandro Moretti didn’t blink. His dark eyes remained fixed on Isabella Bennett, whose delicate hands trembled as she clutched the sleeping bundle against her chest. Outside, Lake Michigan was churning under a freezing winter gale, throwing sheets of white against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse study. But inside, the air was suffocatingly hot, heavy with the scent of vintage bourbon, expensive cedarwood, and the lingering fragrance of sweet jasmine—the exact scent Isabella had worn thirteen months ago in an anonymous lake house outside Lake Geneva.

"You took something that belonged to my mother, Isabella," Alessandro murmured, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly quiet register that usually made seasoned cartel bosses reach for their sidearms. "A sapphire pendant worn by three generations of Moretti matriarchs. Yet tonight, you walk into my private estate, slip past six armed security rings, and hand it back as if you were merely returning a misplaced umbrella."

"I only came to give it back," Isabella whispered, stepping backward until her spine hit the carved bookshelf. "It wasn't mine to keep. You gave it to me that night because you were drowning in grief over your brother, Alessandro. You weren't thinking clearly. I kept it safe until I was certain you wouldn't tear the city apart looking for it."

"And the girl?" Alessandro asked softly, taking one deliberate step toward her. The floorboards didn't even creak beneath his polished Oxford shoes. "Did you keep her safe from me too?"

Little Sophie stirred under the cashmere wrap, letting out a soft whimper that sounded impossibly fragile against the silent dominance of the room. Isabella looked down, her protective maternal instinct flaring like wildfire. She knew what this man was capable of. She had read the encrypted files left behind in a rusted locker by her late father, an accountant who had died mysteriously after auditing the Moretti shipping terminals. Alessandro Moretti wasn't just a high-society philanthropist who donated millions to pediatric hospitals; he was the undisputed king of Chicago’s underworld, a man whose word dictated life and death across the Midwest.

"She has nothing to do with you," Isabella lied, forcing her chin up, though her knees shook beneath the folds of her thrift-store skirt. "I met someone. A mechanic from Evanston. We were together for three months before he left for the coast. The birthmark is just a coincidence, Alessandro. Medical science calls it a pigment anomaly. Don't build a fantasy out of ink on skin."

Alessandro let out a harsh, dry chuckle that held no humor at all. He reached out with two fingers, not to snatch the child, but to gently lift the corner of the white blanket. The broken-heart birthmark gleamed under the soft glow of the desk lamp, a twin to the mark scarred near his own collarbone. "A coincidence? No, Isabella. A Moretti heart never lies. And neither do you, no matter how desperately you try."
