Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The study phone rang, an urgent, low chirp that broke the heavy silence. Alessandro pressed the speaker button with an impatient swipe.
"Boss, Castillo isn't waiting," Marco's voice crackled through the secure line, laced with tension. "He just marched up to the second floor with his security detail. He claims he smelled sweet perfume coming from your private wing and wants to congratulate you on your new companion. He's making a scene in front of the council members."
Alessandro’s face hardened into stone. The compassionate man who had looked at the baby with awe vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless patriarch feared by three crime families. "Lock down the eastern stairwell. If Castillo steps past the marble archway, put a bullet through his shoe. I'm coming down."
He cut the connection and turned to Isabella. He opened a disguised panel in the wainscoting, revealing an elevator car designed for emergency extractions.
"Step inside," Alessandro commanded, taking off his heavy woolen overcoat and wrapping it around both Isabella and the child. The coat smelled of rich tobacco, rain, and masculine cedar, immediately enveloping them in comforting warmth. "This elevator leads to a sub-level garage. My personal driver, Lev, is waiting with an armored Suburban. He will take you to my secure compound in Highland Park."
"No," Isabella resisted, holding her ground. "I'm not going to another gilded cage, Alessandro. Let me take Sophie and walk out through the service exit. Nobody knows me. I'm just a ghost."
"Castillo has your face on his phone right now, Isabella!" Alessandro snapped, his voice a low, terrifying roar that made Sophie wake up with a startled cry. Seeing the panic in Isabella’s eyes, he instantly softened his posture, dropping to one knee before her. "Please. Look at me. For the first time tonight, stop fighting me and look at me."
Isabella looked down at the fearsome mafia boss kneeling at her feet, a man who bowed to no king or court, pleading with her with raw desperation.

"I spent twelve months waking up in an empty bed, wondering why you vanished into thin air after the most real night of my entire life," Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion. "I thought you hated me. I thought you found out who I was and ran in disgust. But now I know you were carrying my daughter in secret, terrified and alone in the cold. I cannot undo the fear I caused you. But I swear on my mother’s soul, if you step into that elevator, I will eliminate every threat between here and Lake Michigan. Just give me the chance to be her father."
Isabella’s chest hitched as she looked between Sophie’s innocent, searching eyes and Alessandro’s desperate face. With a trembling nod, she stepped into the elevator.
