Chapter 6 - The Siege of Vale House

"Down!" Adrien roared, shoving Clare to the marble floor and shielding her body with his own as high-caliber rounds shredded the kitchen cabinets, raining splintered wood and shattered glass across the room.

Alarms blared through the estate, a deafening klaxon that signaled a full perimeter breach. Over the radio on Gabriel’s tactical belt, frantic shouts crackled: "Main gate breached! Two black SUVs! They’re heavily armed—it’s Moretti’s strike team!"

"Sophie!" Clare screamed, attempting to crawl toward the corridor. "She’s upstairs in the bedroom!"

"Stay here!" Adrien commanded, drawing a matte-black customized SIG Sauer from beneath his arm. "Gabriel, take Clare to the reinforced panic cellar beneath the pantry. Lock the vault doors from the inside."

"I am not leaving my daughter!" Clare fought back, clawing at Adrien’s sleeve with frantic, maternal fury. "She can't hear the alarms, Adrien! If they go up there, she won't even know they're coming!"

Her words hit Adrien like a hammer. She was right. With Sophie's hearing condition, a firefight would sound like distant muffled thunder, or nothing at all. She would be sitting alone in the dark, confused and defenseless.

"Gabriel, cover the west corridor," Adrien ordered, his voice cold and terrifyingly calm amid the chaos. "Clare, stay behind me. We move fast."

Gunfire rattled through the main foyer. The estate’s private security guards were already engaging Moretti’s hitmen on the ground floor. Adrien moved like a lethal shadow, clearing each hallway corner with ruthless precision. Two masked gunmen rounded the grand staircase, rifles raised, but Adrien fired four rapid shots, dropping both targets instantly before they could pull their triggers.

Clare suppressed a scream, keeping her head down as she followed Adrien up the eastern staircase toward Sophie’s bedroom.

Inside the bedroom, the scene was eerily peaceful. Sophie was sitting on the floor beside her bed, her back to the door. She was wearing her bulky noise-canceling headphones, humming a soft, out-of-tune melody while drawing in her green notebook. She had no idea the house around her was being torn apart by war.

Clare rushed forward and scooped Sophie into her arms, pulling the headphones off. "Sophie, baby, we have to go right now!"

Sophie blinked, startled by her mother’s wild eyes and the smoky haze filling the hallway. "Mom? Is the scary man angry?"

Adrien appeared in the doorway, reloading his sidearm with a swift, fluid motion. He knelt down so he was at eye level with the little girl. Despite the gunfire echoing downstairs, his expression softened completely.

"No, Sophie," Adrien said clearly, ensuring she could read his lips. "I am not angry. But we are going on an adventure to a safe place. Do you trust me?"

Sophie looked into his dark eyes, then reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out the small red recorder. She pressed the button, and Adrien’s recorded voice echoed in the smoky room: You are not alone.

Sophie nodded bravely. "I trust you."

Adrien scooped Sophie up in his left arm, holding his weapon ready in his right, and guided Clare down the service stairs toward the underground docks beneath the cliffside mansion.
