Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Revealed

"You knew him as Julian Vance, didn't you?" Adrien asked, his voice softening by a fraction.
Clare’s knees buckled, and Adrien caught her firmly by the waist, steadying her against the counter. She covered her mouth with a trembling hand, weeping silently as seven years of sorrow, fear, and confusion crashed over her.
"He told me he was an architect," Clare sobbed, her voice muffled against Adrien’s chest before she pulled back, terrified of her own vulnerability. "We were together for eight months in Providence. He was gentle, kind, funny... he talked about leaving the country, buying a small farm in Portugal. Then one night, he gave me that locket. He said if anything ever happened to him, I was to sell it only if I was starving. The next day, his phone was disconnected. A week later, I saw a tiny news clip about a car found in the river. I never even got to tell him I was pregnant."
Adrien stood completely still, absorbing the reality of her words. Julian had loved this woman. He had tried to build a sanctuary away from the mafia wars, only to be dragged into the abyss before he could escape.
"Why didn't you go to the police?" Adrien asked.
"Because the police reports called it a mob execution!" Clare cried out, her eyes blazing with raw terror. "I was a twenty-one-year-old girl with an unborn baby! I knew if whoever killed him found out about me, they would kill my child too! I changed my name, moved three times, took cash jobs cleaning houses. When Sophie started losing her hearing, I ran out of money. I applied for this job through an agency because the pay was high enough to afford her specialist visits. I had no idea who owned this house!"
Before Adrien could speak, Gabriel appeared at the kitchen doorway, holding a sealed manila envelope. His expression told Adrien everything before the paper was even unfolded.
Adrien took the envelope and tore it open.
The Cambridge lab report was unequivocal: Familial Match Confirmed. Secondary degree relationship (Uncle/Niece) probability: 99.8%.
Adrien looked from the paper to Clare, whose chest was heaving with panic. "Is Sophie... his daughter?" she asked in a tiny, broken whisper, terrified of what the answer meant for their safety.
"Sophie is Julian's daughter," Adrien said, his voice thick with profound gravity. "And she is my niece. She is a Vale."
Clare shrank back, horror washing over her features. "No... please, Mr. Vale. Don't take her from me. She's all I have. I won't ask for a single dollar of your money, I swear! Just let me take her and leave!"

Adrien stepped forward, closing the distance between them, and placed both hands firmly on her shoulders. "Listen to me, Clare. I am not taking your daughter. You carried her, protected her, and fought for her through hell alone. But you will never run again. From this moment on, no one touches you or Sophie. You are under the protection of the Vale empire."
At that moment, the screech of tires echoed across the gravel driveway outside, followed by the deafening crack of automatic gunfire shattering the front windows of Vale House.
