Chapter 4 - A Ghost from Seven Years Ago

The silence in Adrien’s study was suffocating. On the desk lay high-resolution still frames captured from the courtyard security cameras, zoomed in on the golden locket hanging around Sophie’s neck. Beside the photos sat an identical heirloom: a heavy gold signet ring bearing the exact same falcon and anchor crest.

"Explain this, Gabriel," Adrien said, his voice deadly quiet. "My brother Julian carried that custom locket everywhere. He had it forged in Florence eight years ago. When his car was pulled from the river after the Moretti ambush, his body was recovered, but his personal effects were gone. How does a six-year-old girl in my kitchen possess my dead brother’s most prized possession?"

Gabriel looked unusually shaken. "Boss, I looked into Clare Bennett's background again, digging past the surface identity she gave the employment agency. Seven years ago, she wasn't living in Maine under the name Bennett. She was an art student in Providence named Clare Vance. And seven years ago, Julian was managing our Rhode Island operations incognito under an alias."

Adrien’s jaw tightened. "Are you telling me Julian had a relationship with her?"

"Julian kept his private life completely separate from the family business toward the end," Gabriel whispered. "You remember how he hated the violence. He wanted out. What if Clare didn't steal that locket? What if Julian gave it to her before he was killed?"

Adrien stared at the photograph of Sophie. He calculated the dates in his head with agonizing precision. Sophie was six years and four months old. Julian had been murdered seven years and two months ago.

"Get a sample," Adrien commanded, his voice thick with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to feel. "Sophie’s hairbrush, a cheek swab from her glass, anything. Run a familial DNA match against my own genetic profile. I want the results expedited. Use our private lab in Cambridge. Do not let Clare know."

"And if she is Julian's daughter?" Gabriel asked quietly. "That makes Sophie the legitimate blood heir to the entire Vale estate. It also means Vincent Moretti will stop at nothing to butcher her if he realizes Julian's bloodline survived."

"Then we burn Moretti to the ground," Adrien replied without a shred of hesitation. "Go."

Downstairs in the kitchen, Clare was making chamomile tea to calm her frayed nerves. The excitement of the New York prognosis had given way to an instinctual dread. She knew Gabriel had recognized the locket. She had kept Sophie hidden in small towns for years, terrified that the men who murdered her gentle, enigmatic artist lover would find them. When she took the job at Vale House, she had no idea Adrien was connected to that dark past; the names had been masked behind shell companies and corporate trusts.

Suddenly, the kitchen door swung open, and Adrien entered. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing only a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the faded scars along his forearms.

"Mr. Vale," Clare whispered, backing up against the marble counter. "Sophie is asleep. The doctor said she needs rest before the surgery next week."

Adrien didn't mention the surgery. He stepped closer, stopping only inches from her. The scent of rain, cedar, and expensive tobacco surrounded him. "Who gave Sophie the golden locket, Clare?"

Clare’s breath hitched. She looked away, refusing to meet his piercing gaze. "I told Gabriel. It's a family heirloom."

Adrien reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently catching her chin and turning her face back toward his. "Do not lie to me. That crest belongs to the Vale family. It belonged to Julian."

Clare gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes as the puzzle pieces slammed together in her mind with terrifying force. "Julian... Vale? Julian was your brother?"
