Chapter 8 - The True Heirs
""Luca..."" Evelyn whispered, tears spilling down her pale, gaunt cheeks.
Luca pulled off his heavy wool trench coat and wrapped it securely around her shivering shoulders. He carefully adjusted her oxygen mask, his hands unusually gentle for a man who had just dismantled an armed squad in seconds. ""I am here, Evelyn. You are safe now. Mia is safe at the manor. She gave me the hospital bill.""
A faint, tearful smile broke across Evelyn's lips. ""She... she actually delivered it?""
""Every single cent,"" Luca replied softly, pressing his forehead against her trembling hand. ""The medical team is waiting outside. We are flying you directly to the private medical pavilion at the estate. The best surgeons in the country are already scrubbed in.""
Twenty minutes later, a fleet of armored medical transports roared through the gates of the Moretti estate. Evelyn was carefully wheeled into the state-of-the-art medical suite on the second floor, where a team of specialists immediately began intensive treatment for her advanced pneumonia and malnutrition.
Down in the great hall, the entire Moretti family council had assembled under emergency summons. Don Vittorio Moretti, the ailing patriarch, had been brought downstairs in a wheelchair, his stern, weathered face grim as he surveyed the chaos.
Vanessa sat on the velvet sofa, trembling with apprehension, while Julian stood beside his father with a thick ream of legal documents. Marco was shoved into the center of the room by two heavily armed guards, his face bruised and swollen, handcuffs biting into his wrists.
""What is the meaning of this outrage?!"" Vanessa screamed hysterically. ""Luca has attacked his own brother! He has brought street trash into our sacred ancestral home!""
Julian stepped forward, laying a certified forensic dossier on the patriarch's lap. ""Silence, Vanessa. While Luca was rescuing Evelyn, Dante retrieved the original physical blood samples that Dr. Vance attempted to destroy. I personally oversaw an independent, triple-blind genetic sequence at the state university forensic lab.""
Julian turned to his father and the assembled capos. ""The results are definitive. Mia Hart carries a 99.98% direct genetic match to Luca Moretti. She is the direct granddaughter of Don Vittorio, and by the rules of the Moretti charter, she is the legitimate primary heir to the family trust.""
