Chapter 7 - Ambush at the Rail Yard

The abandoned industrial rail yard sat shrouded in dense gray fog. Rusting freight cars lined the tracks like giant iron coffins. Inside a dilapidated maintenance shed, three armed mercenaries stood watch over a gurney where Evelyn Hart lay hooked to a portable oxygen tank, pale and frail, but awake.
Marco stepped into the shed, his polished leather shoes crunching over broken glass. He looked down at Evelyn with sheer contempt.
""You should have stayed buried in the slums, Evelyn,"" Marco said coldly. ""Sending that brat to the manor was the stupidest mistake you ever made. Did you really think Luca would welcome a dock girl’s bastard into the billionaire lineage?""
Evelyn coughed weakly, her breathing ragged, but her spirit remained unbroken. ""Luca knows his own blood. And he knows what kind of coward you are, Marco. You always lived in his shadow, and you will die in it.""
Marco sneered, pulling a silenced pistol from his coat. ""Luca is occupied with a fabricated lab report. By the time he figures out Vance’s betrayal, you’ll be at the bottom of Lake Michigan, and that little girl will be in an anonymous orphanage across state lines.""
Before Marco could chamber a round, the corrugated metal roof of the shed shattered in a deafening explosion of flashbangs and concussive blasts.
Black-clad tactical operators rappelled through the ceiling, their laser sights cutting through the smoke. Gunfire erupted instantly. Marco’s hired mercenaries barely raised their weapons before being neutralized by precision fire.
Marco dove behind a concrete pillar, firing blindly in terror. ""Who gave the order?! Who is that?!""
From the swirling smoke, Luca stepped through the shattered doorway, a customized assault rifle resting against his shoulder. His eyes were cold, void of any brotherly mercy.
""You dared touch what belongs to me, Marco,"" Luca's voice echoed through the vast warehouse like thunder.
Marco dropped his weapon, his hands shaking violently as he raised them into the air. ""Luca! Wait! We are brothers! Blood doesn't kill blood! Father wouldn't allow this!""
Luca walked forward, stopping just inches from Marco. With a single, devastating strike of his rifle butt, he shattered Marco’s jaw, sending him crashing face-first into the filthy concrete.

""You ceased being my brother the second you targeted a four-year-old child,"" Luca whispered. He turned his back on Marco and rushed to the gurney, his ruthless demeanor vanishing as he dropped to his knees beside Evelyn.
