Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Ledger

The silence in the grand foyer felt heavy enough to suffocate a grown man. Rain poured relentlessly beyond the mahogany double doors, but inside the Moretti manor, the only sound was the faint crinkling of damp paper. Luca Moretti stood motionless under the chandelier, clutching the creased medical forms. The handwriting belonged to Evelyn Hart—the only woman who had walked away from his empire four years ago without taking a single dollar.
Before Luca could speak, Marco stepped into the hallway, swirling his bourbon with a mocking smirk. ""Evelyn Hart? The waitress from the south docks? Luca, brother, you really expect us to believe some stray waif showed up on our porch during a hurricane just to ask for formula money? This is a shakedown orchestrated by the Falcone family, or worse, an opportunistic gold digger looking for a payout.""
Vanessa strode up beside Marco, her diamond rings catching the light. She looked down her aristocratic nose at the soaking wet child. ""Send Collins to call the precinct. Or better yet, call child protective services. We do not house random street urchins under the Moretti roof. If the press catches wind of this bastard child, our family stock will crater before the market opens tomorrow morning.""
The little girl did not flinch. She tugged at her yellow raincoat, her oversized boots leaving muddy prints on the polished Italian marble. Looking straight up into Vanessa's sneering face, she spoke with disarming calm. ""Mommy isn't a scammer. She said bad people took her shop and made her sick. She said if I came here, the man who gave me this bunny would pay the hospital so she can get her medicine.""
From her raincoat pocket, the child pulled out a weathered gold medallion snapped cleanly in half, bearing the crest of a roaring lion. Luca’s entire posture hardened into stone. That medallion was one of a kind. He had given the matching half to Evelyn the night she vanished into the shadows of Chicago.
Julian stepped forward, ever the calculating legal mind, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses. ""A physical trinket and a hospital bill aren't proof of lineage, Luca. Legally speaking, any claim on the Moretti trust requires indisputable scientific evidence. Marco is right about one thing—we cannot let emotion override protocol.""
""Prepare the medical wing,"" Luca ordered, his deep baritone cutting through the tension like a razor. ""Call Dr. Vance. I want a rush paternity panel drawn tonight. Nobody leaves this estate until the results are in my hands.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes dramatically. ""A waste of medical resources. But fine, let the science prove this little brat belongs in the gutter.""
Luca knelt down, ignoring the rainwater soaking through his tailored slacks. He met the little girl’s hazel eyes—eyes that mirrored his own with striking clarity. ""What is your name?""
""Mia,"" she replied softly, holding her earless stuffed rabbit against her small chest. ""And I don't want your mansion. I just want Mommy to stop coughing blood.""

A dark, dangerous fire ignited deep inside Luca Moretti. As he gently lifted the girl into his arms, he whispered, ""Nobody hurts your mother, Mia. And nobody lies to me.""
