Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The triumph in the boardroom cemented Nora’s place not just in Asher’s home, but in his heart. The media shifted from calling her a gold-digger to celebrating her as the brilliant, poised tech matriarch who had outmaneuvered Wall Street predators.

Yet, desperation breeds madness.

Ryan Bennett sat in his dingy bail-bond motel in Newark, nursing a bottle of cheap bourbon. His world had ended. Facing twenty years in federal prison for banquet fraud, abandoned by Claire Dalton the moment his bank accounts were frozen, he had nothing left to lose.

His phone buzzed. It was a blocked number.

“Bennett,” a woman’s cold voice hissed. Victoria Sterling. “My father is facing federal indictment because of your pathetic ex-wife. Do you want revenge, or do you want to rot in a cell?”

“I want her dead,” Ryan snarled into the receiver.

“I don’t care about her life,” Victoria said chillingly. “I want that baby gone. Without an heir, Asher will unravel. Meet my associate at the dock warehouse off 12th Avenue. We have her medical route.”

Two days later, Nora was returning from her thirty-second-week ultrasound at Mount Sinai. The scans had shown a healthy, vigorous baby boy. Asher had spent twenty minutes staring at the black-and-white printout in his car, wiping away tears, before a sudden technical crisis at Echelon’s primary research facility forced him to step away for an hour.

“I’ll send the armored SUV with Marcus,” Asher had promised, kissing her forehead. “Go straight home. I’ll be back before seven.”

Nora stepped into the private underground parking garage of Cole Tower. The armored Mercedes pulled up, but as the rear door opened, Nora froze.

Marcus wasn't driving.

Sitting in the driver’s seat was a masked man, and before Nora could scream, a heavy, chemical-soaked rag was clamped over her mouth and nose from behind.

She fought frantically, kicking and clawing, using all her strength to shield her abdomen from impact. But the chloroform was too potent. The garage lights spun into blackness, her vision fading to the sound of tires screeching against concrete.

When Nora opened her eyes, she was tied to a wooden chair in a freezing, cavernous warehouse smelling of damp rot and gasoline.

Standing in front of her, holding an iron wrench, was Ryan.

His eyes were sunken, bloodshot, and wild with deranged malice. “Look at you,” Ryan spat, pacing around her. “The queen of Manhattan. Wearing cashmere while I’m eating stale bread in a flophouse.”

“Ryan, please,” Nora begged, tears streaming down her cheeks, her body curled inward to protect her swollen belly. “Whatever anger you have, it’s with me. Don't hurt the baby. It’s an innocent life!”

“Innocent?” Ryan laughed hysterically, the metallic clinking of the wrench echoing through the rafters. “That baby is Asher Cole’s thirty-billion-dollar dynasty! That baby was supposed to be my meal ticket, and instead, it put me in handcuffs!”

From the shadows, Victoria Sterling stepped forward, dressed in an immaculate trench coat, holding a can of industrial kerosene.

“You ruined my family, Nora,” Victoria said coldly, unscrewing the cap and splashing fuel along the wooden pallets surrounding the chair. “Asher thinks he’s a god who can dictate terms to the world. Let’s see how he rules when his precious heir and his little charity case are reduced to cinders. By the time the fire department puts this out, there won't even be ashes left for him to mourn.”

“You’re monsters!” Nora cried out, struggling against the heavy ropes binding her wrists. “Asher will find you! He will tear the earth apart to find you!”

“He’s thirty miles away in Queens,” Ryan sneered, pulling out a silver lighter. “He’ll find a smoking crater.”

May you like

Ryan flicked the lighter. The small flame danced in the gloom.

Suddenly, the warehouse’s massive corrugated steel roll-up door exploded inward with a deafening, metallic crash.
