Chapter 2 - The Contract and the Penthouse

The penthouse atop the Cole Tower overlooked Central Park, bathed in the amber glow of the setting New York sun. Nora stood by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that felt terrifyingly sheer, clutching Asher’s oversized jacket around her stomach.
She felt like an intruder in a museum of modern glass and slate. Behind her, a massive obsidian desk held a thin leather folder.
Asher loosened his tie and poured a glass of ice water, setting it gently in front of her. “Drink. Dr. Hayes informed me that your morning sickness has been severe and you haven't been keeping down electrolytes.”
Nora froze, staring at the water glass before whipping around to face him. “You’ve been talking to my doctor? You’ve been spying on me?”
“I have been protecting my child,” Asher corrected without raising his voice. He sat behind the desk, resting his forearms against the dark polished wood. There was no arrogance in his posture, only an unnerving, calculating precision. “Brightwell Clinic informed me the exact hour they realized the clerical mix-up. They realized my biological material—preserved five years ago prior to my chemotherapy treatments—was mistakenly thawed and implanted during your transfer cycle.”
Nora crossed her arms over her chest, trembling. “So you track me down to what? Sue me? Take my baby away the second it’s born because you have billions and I have forty dollars?”
Asher leaned back, his gaze softening by a fraction. “Do you think so little of me, Nora?”
“I don’t know you!” she cried out, her voice cracking under the weight of three months of terror. “All I know is you’re a tech mogul who just fired my ex-husband and proposed to me in front of thirty strangers while I had my hands in filthy mop water!”
“I proposed to you because it is the only way to shield you,” Asher said flatly. He tapped the leather folder. “Open it.”
With hesitant fingers, Nora flipped the binder open. Inside were legal documents, financial disclosures, and a thick dossier bearing Ryan Bennett’s photograph alongside Claire Dalton’s.
“Your ex-husband was tipped off last week by a rogue administrator at Brightwell,” Asher explained, his tone razor-sharp. “He discovered the clinic’s blunder. He also learned that Brightwell’s insurance carrier has set aside a thirty-million-dollar out-of-court settlement for the biological mother, provided she waives negligence claims. Ryan filed an amended divorce claim yesterday in secret, alleging you committed fraud during your separation, aiming to claim half that settlement and petition for custody of the child to secure child support.”
Nora’s breath hitched in her throat. She gripped the edge of the desk, nausea rolling through her. “He... he hated the idea of having a child with me. He cheated on me for months while I took needles in my stomach!”
“I know,” Asher said softly. He stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing just inches from her. “Ryan is a parasite. And the law is slow and corruptible when money is involved. But under New York law, if you are legally married to the verified biological father prior to the second trimester milestones, Ryan’s standing to claim marital paternity or extort settlement funds evaporates entirely.”
Nora looked up into his deep, amber-flecked eyes. “You want to marry me... just for legal protection?”
“I want to marry you because that child is mine, and I will tear down this city before I allow anyone to harm the mother carrying it,” Asher said firmly. “Here are my terms: We wed legally tomorrow morning. You will move into this penthouse. You will have full access to my medical staff, nutritionists, and personal accounts. I will give you a stipend of ten million dollars, yours unconditionally, regardless of how long the marriage lasts. In exchange, we present a united front to the public, protect our child’s privacy, and live under this roof together.”

“And between us?” Nora asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. “What are we?”
Asher paused, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “Roommates bound by a sacred duty. Until you decide otherwise.”
