Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

By the twenty-fourth week, Nora felt radiant. The gaunt, exhausted face that had stared back at her from the Crownbridge bathroom mirror was gone, replaced by glowing skin, bright eyes, and a prominent, round baby bump that Asher greeted every morning with a soft kiss before leaving for work.
They had fallen into the habits of real lovers. They ate breakfast together, debated politics over decaf coffee, and fell asleep in the master bedroom—Asher on his side, his arm draped possessively over Nora’s waist, his face buried in her hair.
Yet, outside their high-rise sanctuary, a storm was brewing.
Echelon Robotics was preparing for its largest public stock expansion in company history, a multi-billion-dollar merger with a European healthcare conglomerate. But Asher’s sudden marriage to a former custodian had unsettled the conservative board of directors, led by Arthur Sterling—Victoria’s vengeful father.
Nora was sitting in the penthouse library, reviewing financial grant proposals for a literacy charity Asher had funded in her name, when Asher’s chief of staff, Marcus, arrived unannounced.
Marcus was pale, adjusting his glasses nervously. “Mrs. Cole, Mr. Cole asked me to bring you down to headquarters immediately. We have an emergency board session.”
“An emergency? Is Asher hurt?” Nora jumped up, panic tightening her chest.
“No, ma'am. But Arthur Sterling is calling for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Asher as CEO. They’re claiming Asher’s erratic behavior, rapid marriage, and the questionable paternity of the heir prove he is mentally unfit to lead the merger.”
Twenty minutes later, Nora walked into the top-floor boardroom of Echelon Robotics.
The room fell dead silent. A dozen elderly men in dark three-piece suits sat around a forty-foot glass table. At the head of the table stood Asher, his jaw clenched, his eyes burning with fury. Opposite him stood Arthur Sterling, holding a thick folder.
“Ah, here she is,” Arthur sneered, looking Nora up and down with open condescension. “The great Cinderella. Asher, you expect this board to trust you with thirty billion dollars in institutional capital while you’re making emotional decisions over a hotel maid? We have no proof this child is even yours. You could be covering for an affair, destabilizing this company’s public trust!”
“My personal life is not on the ballot, Arthur,” Asher snarled, stepping forward, his fists balled at his sides. “The DNA certification was provided to the SEC compliance committee yesterday.”
“A certificate you easily could have purchased with your offshore accounts!” Arthur shouted, slamming his palm on the table. “Unless we see a public, televised genetic disclosure, the European partners will withdraw their signatures by midnight! Step down, Asher. Hand over the chairmanship to me, or watch Echelon’s stock crash fifty percent at the opening bell.”
The board members murmured in anxious agreement. Asher looked trapped, his hands trembling with rage. To submit his pregnant wife and unborn child to a humiliating public media circus was unthinkable, but losing the company he built from nothing would destroy everything he had worked for.
Nora felt the kick of the baby against her ribs—strong, defiant, alive.
She didn't shrink back. She didn't look at the floor.
Taking a slow, dignified breath, Nora walked past the seated board members and stood directly at Asher’s side. She placed her hand over his clenched fist. Beneath her palm, she felt his tension shudder, his fingers uncoiling to interlace with hers.
Nora looked directly at Arthur Sterling.
“Mr. Sterling,” she said, her voice ringing clear, articulate, and completely devoid of fear. “You speak of institutional trust, yet you seem to have forgotten basic business ethics. Three weeks ago, Sterling Dynamics secretly offloaded four hundred thousand shares of Echelon stock through shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. You shorted your own partner's stock prior to this meeting, banking on instigating this smear campaign to drive the price down and force a hostile takeover.”
Arthur’s face morphed from smug arrogance to sheer horror. “What... what nonsense are you babbling?”
“It isn’t nonsense,” Nora continued coolly, sliding a tablet she had brought from the penthouse across the glass table. “While my husband was busy developing robotic prosthetics that save amputees’ lives, I spent the last three days auditing the public ledger filings of your subsidiary trusts. As it turns out, having a Columbia degree in analytical research makes reading your clumsy accounting fraud quite simple.”
The entire board gasped. Several members lunged for the tablet, scrolling through the damning transaction logs Nora had compiled.
“This is securities fraud,” one board member declared, glaring at Arthur. “Federal trade violations!”
“Call the SEC,” Asher commanded, his voice cold as a blade. He turned his eyes to Arthur. “And call security. Mr. Sterling’s tenure on this board is officially terminated.”
Arthur collapsed back into his leather chair, trembling and defeated, as two security guards entered to escort him out.

The remaining board members stood up one by one, bowing their heads respectfully toward Nora.
Asher didn't say a word to the board. He simply turned Nora toward him, wrapped both arms around her in front of every executive in the room, and buried his face in her neck, holding her as if she were the only anchor in his entire universe.
