Chapter 9 - Cleansing The Empire

Twenty-four hours later, the private high-security medical suite in New York was quiet. Sunlight poured through expansive bulletproof windows overlooking Central Park. Elena sat in a plush hospital recliner, nursing baby Sophia in complete safety. The nightmare of Chicago felt like a lifetime away, though the faint smell of antiseptic kept the reality grounded.

The door opened softly, and Dante walked in. He wore a clean white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his left arm supported by an orthopedic sling, and neat bandages taped across his neck and jaw. He looked bruised, battered, but completely whole. For the first time since Elena had met him, the perpetual shadow of grief in his silver eyes was gone.

He walked over to the chair, slowly kneeling beside Elena so his eyes were level with hers. He reached out a clean, warm hand, gently stroking Sophia’s delicate cheek. The baby yawned, stretching tiny fingers that instinctively wrapped around Dante's little finger.

""How are you feeling?"" Dante asked, his voice filled with an overwhelming reverence.

""I’m alive. We’re alive,"" Elena answered softly, leaning her cheek against his temple. ""What happened with the syndicate?""

Dante took a deep breath, resting his head against Elena’s knee. ""This morning, I formally abdicated the Chicago throne before the National Commission. Salvatore Rossi will oversee the transition of our legitimate commercial holdings into an independent trust fund. Every casino, every dock contract, every illicit enterprise has been liquidated or turned over to the New York council in exchange for complete, permanent immunity.""

Elena looked at him in astonishment, her heart fluttering. ""You gave up the crown?""

""I never wanted an empire built on blood, Elena,"" Dante confessed, looking up into her eyes with raw honesty. ""I inherited a war when my parents died, and I spent fifteen years fighting ghosts to protect a family name that had already rotted from the inside. When I thought I lost you in that bedroom... when I saw you looking at me like you were entirely alone... I realized that without you, the empire was just an expensive graveyard.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the folded note Victoria had left in their bedroom: Tonight, he’ll finally know the truth.

""The truth wasn't about Luca's revenge,"" Dante said, setting the paper onto the side table. ""The truth was that my real life began the day I married you. And I almost destroyed it because I was too proud to let go of the past.""

A discreet knock sounded at the door. Marco stepped inside, dressed in a sharp business suit without a single weapon visible. ""Boss. Mrs. Moretti. The Commission tribunal has concluded Victoria Hayes' hearing.""

""And?"" Dante asked, standing up straight.

""Stripped of every family asset. Her father’s accounts have been frozen by federal authorities based on the evidence we provided. She has been sentenced to thirty years in federal confinement for conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. She will never see the light of day again.""

Dante nodded once. ""Thank you, Marco. You're dismissed.""

May you like

""Actually, Marco,"" Elena chimed in with a gentle smile. ""Are you still willing to manage private security for a family estate in the countryside?""

Marco’s stoic, battle-hardened face broke into a broad, genuine smile. ""It would be the greatest honor of my life, Mrs. Moretti.""
