Chapter 3 - The Ghost Of The Moretti Blood

The thunder outside shattered the silence of the night, unleashing torrential rain that drummed against the penthouse glass like shrapnel. On the primary control screen, fifteen red perimeter warning lights flashed violently before turning dead black. The compound's backup generators kicked in with a low, mechanical hum, plunging the opulent room into eerie crimson emergency lighting.
""They're inside the outer gate,"" Dante said calmly, his survival instincts completely taking over. The emotional shock of Luca’s betrayal vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, calculated precision of a seasoned warlord. He opened a hidden wall compartment behind a vintage oil painting, revealing racks of high-caliber rifles, tactical vests, and encrypted satellite communicators.
He pulled out a lightweight Kevlar vest tailored for maternity wear, gently sliding it over Elena’s shoulders and fastening the heavy Velcro straps with meticulous care. ""The private elevator is disabled. We take the reinforced service stairs down to the underground bunker beneath the garage. Marco has an armored convoy on standby.""
""Dante, look at the front courtyard monitor,"" Elena whispered, pointing a pale finger toward the single exterior camera that remained online.
Through the rain-streaked infrared lens, three black tactical SUVs sat idling at the fountain circle. Standing in the illumination of the headlights was a tall man wearing a dark trench coat. As lightning flashed across the sky, his face was illuminated in stark, horrific clarity. He had the same razor-sharp cheekbones as Dante, the same dark hair, but his left eyebrow was bisected by a jagged, pale burn scar.
Luca Moretti looked directly into the camera lens, raised a gloved hand, and tapped his wristwatch with a mocking grin.
Suddenly, the penthouse intercom system crackled to life with static. A voice, dripping with theatrical malice, echoed through every speaker in the apartment. ""Happy birthday, big brother. Did you enjoy the lasagna Elena made? I must admit, I always admired how you managed to find women who cook like mother. It’s almost poetic how sentimental you’ve become in your old age.""
Dante grabbed the master radio console, pressing the transmit button. ""You should have stayed in the grave, Luca. Because this time, I won't leave enough of you behind to bury.""
A low, sinister laugh poured out of the speakers. ""You always thought you were the rightful heir because you were born two years earlier! You took the seat, you took the respect, and you took the family fortune! Marcus Hayes gave me what our father never had the courage to offer: complete control. Hand over the ledger keys and your pregnant little civilian, Dante, and maybe I'll let you bleed out with some dignity.""
""Over my dead body,"" Dante spat, releasing the mic.
He turned to Elena, grasping her face between his large, warm hands. He pressed a desperate, fierce kiss to her lips, tasting the salty tears running down her cheeks. ""Listen to me very carefully, my love. Marco is at the service door right now. You are going down to the panic vehicle. You do not look back, you do not wait for me. If I don't join you in ten minutes, Marco has orders to take you across state lines to the safe haven in Montana.""
""No!"" Elena grabbed his wrists, her voice breaking. ""I am not leaving you here to die alone! We swore an oath, Dante!""
""Elena, you carry my heart inside you,"" Dante said, his voice cracking with emotion as he knelt and pressed his lips against her swollen belly. ""If anything happens to you or our baby, my soul dies tonight anyway. Live for me. Keep our child safe.""
Before she could scream, Marco burst through the fire door, his tactical helmet strapped tight. ""Boss! They’ve breached the third-floor lobby! We have ninety seconds before the stairwell is compromised!""

""Take her!"" Dante roared, drawing a secondary weapon from his boot.
Marco gently but firmly grabbed Elena by the arm, escorting her into the reinforced stairwell. Elena looked back one last time through the narrowing doorway. Dante stood framed against the red emergency lights, rifle raised, facing the corridor as the heavy steel security doors at the end of the hall blew apart in a blinding explosion of smoke and fire.
