Chapter 10 - The Italian Dawn

Three years later.

Lake Como, Italy.

The golden afternoon sun reflected off the sparkling blue waters of the lake, warming the terracotta tiles of the historic lakeside villa. Fragrant purple wisteria draped over the stone balustrades, and the rich aroma of fresh garlic, ripe tomatoes, and baking bread drifted through the open kitchen windows into the manicured gardens.

Elena stood on the terrace wearing a breezy sundress, watching four-year-old Sophia chase a golden retriever puppy across the lush green lawn. Sophia’s dark, curly hair bounced in the gentle alpine breeze, her joyful laughter echoing against the mountainside.

Suddenly, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped tenderly around Elena’s waist from behind. Dante pulled her back against his chest, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder. He wore a simple linen shirt and khaki trousers, barefoot on the warm stone tiles. The dangerous mob boss who once terrorized the Chicago underworld was completely unrecognizable in this paradise.

""You've been standing out here for twenty minutes,"" Dante murmured, kissing the soft skin beneath her ear. ""The lasagna is going to get cold.""

Elena turned in his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck. She studied his handsome face. The faint scar near his hairline remained, but the heavy lines of stress and violence had been smoothed away by three years of uninterrupted peace.

""I was just thinking about that night in Chicago,"" Elena admitted softly. ""How close we came to losing everything.""

Dante tightened his hold on her, his expression turning deeply serious and intensely loving. ""Every single day I wake up in this bed beside you, I thank God for giving me a second chance. You saved my soul, Elena. You took a monster and gave him a family.""

""You were never a monster to me, Dante,"" she smiled, running her fingers through his dark hair. ""Just a stubborn man who needed to learn how to let his wife fight beside him.""

""Speaking of fighting,"" Dante said with a roguish grin, gently taking her hand and resting it over her stomach. ""Are you going to tell Sophia today, or should we wait until after dessert?""

Elena laughed, blushing as she pressed Dante’s palm against the subtle, newly forming swell beneath her dress. ""Let’s tell her over dessert. I don't think she's quite ready to accept that she’s going to have a little brother in seven months.""

Dante’s eyes shone with pure, unadulterated joy. He knelt down right there on the terrace, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against her abdomen, exactly as he had done in the darkest moments of their past—only this time, there were no guns, no sirens, and no shadows.

""Daddy! Mommy! Look what Bruno found!"" Sophia squealed, running up the stone steps with the puppy tumbling behind her.

Dante scooped his daughter up into his strong arms with an effortless swing, tossing her gently into the air before holding her tight against his chest. Sophia giggled hysterically, planting a wet kiss on her father’s bearded cheek.

Elena watched them, her heart overflowing with absolute contentment. They had walked through the fires of hell, stripped away an empire of blood, and traded the crown of thorns for a life built on unconditional love, truth, and peace.

As the sun began its slow descent behind the Italian Alps, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet and gold, the Moretti family walked inside together, the heavy wooden doors shutting softly behind them, leaving the past buried forever."
