Chapter 1 - Blood On The Birthday Silk

Elena Moretti kept her trembling fingers pressed hard against the gentle curve of her seven-month-pregnant stomach. The bedroom was suffocatingly quiet. Dante sat beside her on the mattress, his tailored suit jacket abandoned on the floor, holding the folded scrap of paper like it was loaded with live ammunition. For six weeks, she had endured the suffocating presence of Victoria Hayes parading around their Chicago penthouse. She had swallowed the humiliation of another woman answering Dante's private encrypted phone, managing his schedule, and smirking over cold dinners left untouched on the mahogany dining table. But this shattered every defensive wall Elena had left.
""Three weeks ago, that photograph arrived from Milwaukee,"" Dante said, his deep voice carrying a raw edge she had never heard in all their years together. ""A grainy surveillance frame outside an underground poker club. The face was older, scarred, but it was Luca's jawline. Luca's posture. My brother was supposed to have turned to ash eleven years ago in the West Side warehouse arson. If he survived, someone orchestrated a ghost funeral. And the Hayes family handled the shipping manifests for that entire dock district back then.""
Elena stared into the face of the man she loved, feeling an icy hollow open in her chest. ""So Victoria didn't worm her way into this house because of business negotiations. You brought her here to spy on her family.""
""I brought her into my orbit because she offered access to her father's private vault,"" Dante replied, reaching toward her hand. ""Victoria claimed she found Luca’s personal effects locked in Marcus Hayes' safe. Letters. Jewelry. She told me she would trade the ledger and the location of the safe house if I allowed her proximity. I thought if I kept her close, I could uncover who stole my brother without bringing the war into your nursery.""
Elena pulled her hand away before his skin could touch hers. The hurt cut deeper than any physical blow. ""You invited a viper into our home, Dante. You let her walk through my hallway wearing expensive silk and mocking my marriage. You let her answer your calls while I went to ultrasound appointments by myself in the back of an armored SUV. Do you have any idea how it feels to hear the nurses ask where the father is, while I wonder if you’re locked in a boardroom with the woman who wanted your ring?""
Dante’s silver-grey eyes flashed with agony. ""I was trying to shield you from the cartel. If Marcus Hayes knows Luca is alive, he will slaughter anyone tied to the Moretti bloodline to cover up the past. I didn't want you or our baby anywhere near that crossfire.""
""By pushing me into the dark, you pushed me away entirely,"" Elena whispered, standing up slowly on aching feet. ""Look at this note, Dante. 'Tonight, he’ll finally know the truth.' She didn't leave that scarf by accident. She wanted me to find it. She wanted me broken so I would walk away and leave you vulnerable.""
Dante stood up with lethal precision, his six-foot-three frame tense with feral energy. The predatory mob boss who ruled Chicago's underworld was back, completely eclipsing the grieving boy. ""She made a fatal mistake bringing her games past my bedroom door.""
He marched out into the private sitting room where Victoria was pacing near the double doors, still clinging to her arrogant smile. But the second she saw the dead calm in Dante’s eyes, the color drained from her cheeks.
""Dante, darling, don't let her dramatic hormones cloud your judgment,"" Victoria purred, stepping forward with her hands open. ""Elena doesn't understand the blood debt between our families. She's just a civilian you married to play house. My father has the keys to your brother's cell. If you hurt me, you'll never see Luca breathe again.""

Dante closed the distance in two strides, his hand clamping around Victoria’s slender throat with enough force to freeze her breath without crushing her windpipe. His voice was a velvet threat. ""You brought a note written in my brother’s handwriting into the room where my child sleeps. Did you think I wouldn't recognize his signature slant? Did you think I was too blind to see you've been playing both sides?""
Elena walked to the threshold, her hand steady on her belly, watching the facade crumble as Victoria choked out a single, terrified confession: ""It wasn't a rescue mission, Dante... he's coming tonight to take your crown!""
