Chapter 5 - The Ambush In The Alley

Elena moved with the frantic efficiency of a mother driven by survival. Within three minutes, she had packed a small duffel bag with Leo’s clothes, his favorite picture books, and the worn stuffed bear. She bundled the sleepy, confused little boy into a thick blue winter coat, wrapping a woolen scarf around his neck.

""Mommy, where are we going?"" Leo rubbed his eyes, leaning his heavy head against Elena's shoulder. ""Is it morning?""

""No, sweetheart,"" Elena whispered, kissing his forehead while trying to mask the tremor in her voice. ""We're going on a little trip with... with Michael.""

Leo looked over at Michael, who stood by the apartment door, checking the magazine of his Kimber .45 with practiced, silent grace. The heavy slide racked back and snapped forward with a crisp metallic click.

""We're going out the fire escape,"" Michael instructed, sliding the pistol beneath his coat. ""The front entrance is covered by the sedan. The rear alley leads to an access road behind an abandoned meatpacking warehouse. I have a car stashed two blocks north.""

""Can't you just call your men?"" Elena asked, adjusting Leo’s weight in her arms.

""If I call my men, Marcus will intercept the frequency. Right now, the only people I trust are inside this room. Give Leo to me.""

""No,"" Elena said instinctively, pulling the child tighter.

""Elena,"" Michael said, his voice entirely gentle, a tone she hadn't heard from him since the early days of their marriage. ""It's three flights of rusty iron stairs in the freezing rain. If you slip, he falls. Let me carry him. I swear to you on my life, he will not slip from my arms.""

Elena looked at Michael’s broad, steady shoulders, then looked down at her own trembling hands. Swallowing her pride and terror, she gently handed Leo over.

The moment Michael took his son into his arms, something shifted inside him. The boy was warm, surprisingly light, and smelled of baby shampoo and clean rain. Leo instinctively wrapped his small arms around Michael’s neck, burrowing his face into the hollow of Michael’s throat. Michael’s heart hammered against his ribs—not from fear of the men outside, but from an overwhelming, suffocating surge of fierce protectiveness. He had killed for power, for vengeance, and for pride. For this boy, he knew he would gladly burn the world.

""Hold on tight, little man,"" Michael whispered.

He kicked open the rusty window of the kitchen and stepped out onto the iron grating of the fire escape. The cold rain lashed at them immediately, slicking the metal rungs. Elena climbed out behind him, pulling the window shut.

Carefully, silently, they descended into the darkness of the alley. Michael moved with cat-like precision, his body shielding Leo from the wind and water. When they hit the mud of the alley floor, Michael didn't pause. ""Move. Fast.""

They hurried down the narrow passage between the crumbling brick buildings. But just as they reached the mouth of the alley connecting to the northern street, the beam of heavy headlights violently slashed through the rain, pinning them like deer in the open.

A black SUV roared around the corner, tires screaming against wet asphalt, sliding horizontally to block their escape route.

The doors flew open. Three men stepped out into the rain, wearing dark parkas, semi-automatic handguns drawn and raised.

From behind them in the alley, heavy footsteps splashed in the puddles. The two men from the gray sedan had followed them down. They were boxed in.

""Well, well,"" a gravelly voice echoed through the alley. Stepping out from behind the SUV's headlights was Marcus Vance. He was an older man, gray-haired, with a crooked nose and teeth stained by cheap cigars. A cruel, triumphant grin stretched across his weathered face.

""Look what we have here,"" Marcus mocked, raising a heavy Colt revolver. ""The great Michael Reed, sneaking around the slums like a rat. And look at the bonus. The ghost wife and the secret prince.""

Leo let out a terrified cry and buried his face deeper into Michael's neck.

Michael didn't panic. He shifted Leo slightly to his left arm, positioning his broad frame squarely in front of Elena, who was hyperventilating behind him. His right hand slipped slowly inside his wool coat.

May you like

""You made a mistake coming here, Marcus,"" Michael said, his voice dropping into that chilling, flat register that signaled impending death.

""Did I?"" Marcus laughed, stepping forward, his men closing the circle. ""You're outnumbered five to one, Reed. You're holding a toddler, and your ex-wife is shaking so hard she can barely stand. Drop your gun, hand over the codes to the Zurich holding accounts, and maybe... just maybe... I let the kid grow up in an orphanage.""
