Chapter 4 - Shadows On The Corner

Leo took a cautious step forward, his little fingers tightening around the ear of his stuffed bear. He looked Michael up and down, fascinated by the silver watch peeking out from beneath Michael's dark sleeve and the quiet authority radiating from the tall stranger.
""Do you know my mommy?"" Leo asked, his voice innocent and pure.
""I used to,"" Michael said softly, keeping his hands still so as not to startle the child. ""A long time ago. We were... good friends.""
Elena rushed forward, her hands shaking as she pulled Leo back against her legs, shielding him with her body. Her eyes were wild, pleading, burning with maternal fury. ""That's enough, Leo. Bed. Now.""
""Mommy—""
""Leo, please!""
Hearing the sheer panic in his mother's voice, the boy shrank back, his lower lip quivering. He cast one last lingering, curious glance at Michael before turning and scampering back into the small bedroom, clicking the door shut behind him.
Elena stood there, chest heaving, facing Michael like a mother wolf defending her den. ""You've seen him. You know he's healthy. You know he's safe. Now get out.""
Michael rose slowly to his feet. The vulnerability that had softened his features a moment before hardened into something lethal and focused.
""He's not safe, Elena,"" Michael said, his voice flat.
Elena let out a bitter, humorless laugh. ""He was perfectly safe for three years until you walked through that door tonight!""
""Look out your window,"" Michael ordered quietly.
Elena frowned, suspicion flaring in her gaze, but she stepped cautiously to the cracked window pane and peered through the sheer lace curtain into the drizzling street below.
Parked at the far corner, underneath the buzzing amber glow of a dying streetlight, was a battered gray sedan. Inside, the silhouettes of two men were barely visible through the fogged glass. The red ember of a lit cigarette pulsed rhythmically in the darkness.
""They're just neighborhood guys,"" Elena said, though a tremor of doubt ran through her voice. ""People park there all the time.""
""Those aren't neighborhood guys,"" Michael said, stepping up behind her, keeping his body positioned so as to shield her from the glass without touching her. ""They've been sitting there since four this afternoon. They aren't watching your neighbors, Elena. They are watching this door. They were watching you when you came home with Leo.""
Elena turned to look at him, her face turning ashen. ""Who... who are they?""
""Earlier today, my organization was breached,"" Michael explained, every word measured and cold. ""Two million dollars was stolen from our payroll accounts, along with encrypted ledgers detailing our shipping routes through the Great Lakes. The man who stole it was Marcus Vance.""
Elena gasped softly. She remembered that name. Marcus Vance had been a high-ranking lieutenant in Michael's father's old crew—a vicious, calculating man whom Michael had demoted to running docks after taking control of the syndicate.
""Marcus hated you,"" she whispered.
""Marcus hated that he couldn't control me,"" Michael corrected. ""He went rogue this morning. And Ethan found out an hour ago that Marcus didn't just breach our bank accounts; he cracked Ethan's private phone. Ethan kept one off-the-grid contact number. One address, saved under an alias. This address.""
The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Elena’s hand flew to her mouth. ""No. No, no, no...""
""Marcus doesn't just want my money, Elena. He wants leverage. He knows that if he has you and Leo, he can force me to hand over the entire city, sign over every dock, every warehouse, and let him walk away untouched. And once he has what he wants, he will kill all three of us.""
""You brought this to our door!"" she hissed, tears spilling over her eyelashes, her voice a mix of terror and rage. ""We were invisible! We were dead to the world!""
""Ethan’s mistake brought it here, but I am the only thing standing between you and Marcus's crew right now,"" Michael said, taking her shoulders gently.
She flinched at his touch, but she didn't pull away; she was trembling too violently.
""I don't care about the money, Elena. I don't care about the ledgers. But I will tear this city apart with my bare hands before I let anyone lay a finger on you or our son. We have five minutes before those two men realize Ethan isn't the one who came up here. Pack a bag for Leo. We're leaving.""
May you like
""Where?"" Elena asked, her eyes wild. ""To your fortress? To your guards?""
""Somewhere safe,"" Michael promised, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned through her defenses. ""You don't have to trust me, Elena. But you have to trust that I would rather die than see Leo hurt. Pack the bag.""
