Chapter 10 - Where The Roses Bloom

Elena took a slow, deliberate step forward.

She reached out, her hand resting against his chest, right over his hammering heart. Michael flinched slightly, startled by the warmth of her touch, but he didn't pull away.

""You're an idiot, Michael Reed,"" she whispered, a watery smile breaking through her tears.

Michael blinked, confusion clouding his sharp gray-blue eyes. ""Elena... what are you saying?""

""Three years ago, you were a monster,"" she said, looking up into his face. ""You cared more about your empire than the blood on your carpet. You cared more about being feared than being human. That’s why I left. I couldn't let my baby be raised by a man who had sold his soul.""

She slid her hand up to his cheek, feeling the rough stubble against her palm.

""But the man who dropped to his knees on my cheap linoleum floor yesterday... the man who put his body between my son and five guns... the man who is standing here offering to break his own heart just to give us peace... that man isn't the monster I ran from.""

""Elena, my life is dangerous—""

""Then change it,"" she interrupted fiercely, her eyes blazing with that same unyielding spirit that had made him fall in love with her a decade ago. ""You own the city, don't you? You have enough legitimate businesses to employ half of Illinois. Sell the docks. Cut ties with the syndicates. Let Ethan take the underworld if he wants it, or shut it down completely. But don't you dare send me to Vermont alone and pretend that's what Leo needs.""

Michael stared at her, his mind struggling to process the impossible hope blooming in his chest. ""You... you want to stay?""

""I want Leo to have his father,"" Elena said, stepping closer until her forehead rested gently against his collarbone. ""And maybe... just maybe... I want to see if the man I fell in love with ten years ago can finally come home.""

The breath left Michael in a ragged, shuddering gasp. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against him, burying his face in her hair. It smelled of rain, vanilla, and life. For three years, he had been a hollow shell walking through a cemetery. Now, holding her in his arms, the color returned to his world, vivid and burning bright.

The library door clicked open, accompanied by a small, hesitant giggle.

Michael and Elena pulled back slightly to see Leo standing in the doorway, his face smeared with maple syrup, clutching his one-eyed bear. Ethan stood behind him, looking remarkably sheepish, holding a napkin.

""He escaped the kitchen, Boss,"" Ethan muttered, though a broad, knowing grin touched the corners of his mouth. ""Claimed he had to find the king.""

Leo looked at Michael, then looked at Elena's hand resting on Michael’s shoulder. His wide gray-blue eyes lit up with pure, untainted joy.

""Are you Mommy's prince now?"" Leo asked, walking forward with sticky hands.

Michael dropped down onto one knee, not caring in the slightest about the maple syrup as Leo ran directly into his open arms. Michael lifted his son up into the air, holding him tight against his chest, laughing—a rich, deep, joyful sound that hadn't echoed through the halls of the Reed estate in a lifetime.

""No, buddy,"" Michael said, looking over at Elena, who was wiping away tears of pure happiness. ""I'm just your dad. And I'm never letting you go again.""

Six months later, the spring sun bathed the Chicago botanical gardens in brilliant light.

Reed Holdings had completely divested from the shipping docks, transferring its entire portfolio into clean energy and commercial real estate. Ethan Cole ran the private security firm, legitimate and above board, while the old syndicates had either disbanded or moved out of the state, unable to operate without Michael’s iron protection.

In a quiet corner of the botanical grounds, beneath a wooden arbor covered in blooming red roses, Leo was running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Ethan had bought him for his fourth birthday.

Michael sat on a wooden bench, wearing a simple navy polo and jeans, his arm wrapped securely around Elena’s shoulders. She leaned against him, her head resting on his chest, her left hand resting on his knee.

On her ring finger, beside the restored gold band, sat a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond, catching the warm afternoon light.

""He's getting fast,"" Elena observed, watching Leo tumble onto the soft grass, giggling hysterically as the puppy licked his cheeks.

""He gets that from you,"" Michael smiled, kissing the crown of her head. ""You were always the one who knew how to run.""

May you like

Elena turned her face upward, catching his lips in a sweet, lingering kiss that tasted of peace, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

""I don't need to run anymore, Michael,"" she whispered against his lips. ""I'm already where I belong."""
