Chapter 8 - The Trust Fund

Two months passed. The peace treaty between the three syndicates held strong, bringing unprecedented stability to the region. With the rivalries quelled and Marco's corrupt network dismantled, Lorenzo began quietly restructuring his family's assets, divesting from violent, illegal operations and moving vast capital reserves into legitimate enterprises—commercial real estate, green energy, and private educational foundations.

One afternoon, Lorenzo invited Elena and his personal estate attorney, Charles Whitmore, into his private study.

Whitmore opened an embossed leather portfolio and laid out three formal legal instruments on the mahogany desk.

“Elena,” Lorenzo began, gesturing toward the documents, “today I have finalized the creation of the Sophie Carter Irrevocable Trust. The trust is funded with an initial endowment of twenty-five million dollars, managed independently by an elite board of financial fiduciaries.”

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at the paper, unable to process the sheer magnitude of the number. “Lorenzo... twenty-five million? That’s... that’s an astronomical fortune. We could never use that kind of money.”

“The funds are structured with strict parameters,” Whitmore explained with a polite, professional smile. “Full coverage for all educational pursuits through graduate school, medical coverage, private residential properties upon reaching age twenty-five, and entrepreneurial grants should Sophie wish to start her own business or charitable foundation. Elena, you are named as the primary co-trustee with full living allowances.”

Lorenzo looked at Elena, his expression deeply earnest. “I want Sophie to grow up with choices, Elena. I never had them. I was born into a world where blood and violence were inherited traits. Sophie deserves a life of light, knowledge, and freedom. She will never have to bow to anyone, and she will never have to worry about where her next meal comes from.”

Elena reached out, her hand trembling as she touched Lorenzo’s forearm. “Thank you, Lorenzo. From the bottom of a mother’s heart, thank you.”

Just then, the study door creaked open, and Sophie poked her head inside, holding a small box wrapped in colorful comic-book newspaper and tied with kitchen twine.

“Sophie,” Elena chided gently. “Mr. Lorenzo is in a meeting with his lawyer.”

“It’s alright,” Lorenzo said, waving her inside with a warm gesture. “What do you have there, Sophie?”

Sophie walked up to the large desk, stood on her tiptoes, and placed the small box directly in front of him. “I made this for you in art class today.”

Lorenzo carefully untied the twine and folded back the paper. Inside lay a handmade ceramic button, painted bright crimson, with four neat holes in the center and a small handwritten inscription on the back in crooked crayon letters: FOR MR. LORENZO'S COAT.

Lorenzo stared at the little red button, a sudden lump forming in his throat. He looked down at the child, whose smile was brighter than the morning sun.

“It’s to replace the bad button,” Sophie explained earnestly. “So you always stay safe.”

“It is the finest gift I have ever received,” Lorenzo said, his voice thick with emotion as he carefully slid the button into his vest pocket.
