Chapter 5 - The Innocent Cleared

With Marco Beluchcci and his conspirators loaded into federal transport vehicles, the oppressive darkness that had hung over the estate began to lift. The estate’s security staff stood along the driveway in complete silence, their heads lowered in shame and respect as the true traitors were driven through the iron gates under armed guard.
Lorenzo walked back into the main residence and headed straight toward the kitchen.
Inside, Elena was sitting at the wooden prep table, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, exhausted tears. Sophie was sitting beside her, carefully coloring the picture of a large brown rabbit with a bright pink crayon. When the heavy door clicked open, Elena looked up, terror still lingering in her red, swollen eyes.
Lorenzo stopped a few feet away, took off his heavy coat, and set it over the back of a chair.
“Elena,” he said gently, his deep voice carrying a warmth that none of his business associates had ever heard. “It’s over. Marco and Julian Vance have been arrested by federal authorities. You are completely cleared of all suspicion.”
Elena let out a ragged sob, pressing her apron against her mouth as she sank back into her chair. “Mr. Lorenzo... I swear to you on my husband’s memory, I would never do anything to harm you. You gave us a home when we had nowhere else to turn.”
“I know that, Elena,” Lorenzo replied softly, pulling out a chair and sitting down beside them. “And I owe you an apology. You were subjected to suspicion in a home where you should have felt completely protected. That will never happen again.”
Sophie put down her crayon and looked up at Lorenzo with her large, innocent eyes. “Did you find the man with the missing button, Mr. Lorenzo?”
Lorenzo’s face softened into a rare, genuine smile. He reached out and gently patted the top of her head. “We found him, Sophie. And we found the man who told him to do it. You were the bravest person on this entire estate today.”
Sophie beamed, picking up her drawing and holding it out toward him. It was a crayon sketch of a big black car, with a tiny girl holding a giant rabbit standing proudly in front of it. “This is for you. So you remember not to get in cars without checking first.”
Tony, standing by the doorway, let out a rare, quiet chuckle, wiping a stray tear from his eye. Lorenzo took the colorful piece of paper, folded it with infinite care, and placed it directly inside the breast pocket of his bespoke suit, right over his heart.
“I will keep it with me always,” Lorenzo promised. “Now, Elena, pack your bags and Sophie’s things.”
Elena’s face drained of color again, her hands trembling. “You’re... you’re letting us go?”
Lorenzo shook his head firmly. “No. You are moving out of the service quarters tonight. The east guest villa—the one overlooking the rose gardens—is yours. Starting tomorrow, you are no longer the housekeeper, Elena. You are the director of household estate operations, with an executive salary and full benefits. And Sophie’s education will be handled by private tutors at my expense.”

Elena stared at him in stunned disbelief, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as she clutched Sophie tightly against her chest. “Mr. Lorenzo... that’s too much. We can’t possibly accept that.”
“A life has no price tag, Elena,” Lorenzo said firmly, standing up. “Sophie saved mine today. Taking care of her future is the least this family can do.”
