Chapter 4 - The Viper's Last Stand

The clock in the grand entryway struck 11:00 PM. In the library, Marco was frantically typing on an encrypted laptop, preparing wire transfers to secondary offshore accounts in Panama. He had just tried calling Julian Vance three times, only to be redirected to voicemail. A knot of cold dread was tightening in his gut; he knew the silence of the estate was not the calm of security, but the suffocating pressure of a closing vice.

Marco reached into the lower drawer of the mahogany desk, pulled out a snub-nosed revolver, and slipped it into his inner coat pocket. He grabbed his briefcase and moved toward the private side entrance that led directly to the underground parking garage.

As his hand touched the brass handle, the heavy door swung open from the outside.

Standing on the threshold was Lorenzo, his hands calmly resting in the pockets of his dark overcoat. Flanking him on either side were Tony Rigio and Special Agent Rachel Voss. Behind them stood two uniformed federal marshals, their sidearms holstered but their hands resting on their tactical belts.

“Leaving so soon, cousin?” Lorenzo asked, his tone deceptively conversational. “The peace summit hasn't even concluded its preliminary negotiations.”

Marco froze, his fingers twitching near his coat lapel. “Lorenzo... what is the FBI doing in my private study? Have you completely lost your mind? We don't bring federal badges into this house! That’s against everything our fathers built!”

“Your father was a man of honor, Marco,” Lorenzo said, stepping inside the room and closing the distance between them. “He would have shot you himself for using a housekeeper and her child as human shields to cover your treason.”

Rachel Voss stepped forward, holding up a certified digital tablet displaying a cascade of financial data. “We just received the forensic analysis on the burner phone found in Elena Carter’s quarters. The device was purchased five days ago at a bodega on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn using a credit card registered to one of your shell corporations, Marco. Furthermore, Julian Vance has already signed a full confession under federal supervision detailing your contract with the Moretti family.”

Marco’s face contorted from polished arrogance into pure, unadulterated hatred. He realized the game was over. The empire he had plotted to steal was slipping through his fingers like dry sand.

In a split-second of reckless desperation, Marco reached for the revolver inside his jacket.

Before the steel barrel could clear the fabric of his coat, Tony stepped forward with blinding speed. With a single, brutal deflection, Tony struck Marco’s wrist, sending the gun clattering across the hardwood floor, followed immediately by an open-palm strike to Marco’s solar plexus that drove him to his knees, gasping for air.

“You’re finished, Marco,” Lorenzo whispered, looking down at his gasping cousin with cold disdain. “You wanted power so badly that you forgot who built this house. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, where not even your stolen millions will buy you an extra hour in the sunlight.”

The federal marshals moved in, securing the steel cuffs around Marco’s wrists and dragging him out into the rain.
