Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Red Button

Special Agent Rachel Voss leaned down so she was at eye level with Sophie, who was still clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest. The kitchen was warm, filled with the comforting smell of roasted garlic and rosemary, yet the tension in the estate was colder than a tomb. Rachel pulled a small, high-resolution forensic tablet from her leather satchel and opened a series of cataloged images displaying uniform insignias, badges, and tailoring details common to private executive protection firms.

“Sophie,” Rachel asked softly, her voice steady and reassuring. “When you saw that man near the side gate, the one missing the button on his chest, did his jacket look like this?”

Sophie leaned forward, her dark eyes darting across the digital screen. She pointed her small, ink-stained finger at a bespoke navy wool jacket featuring brass fittings with crimson lacquer centers. “It looked like that one. But it didn't have gold letters on the pocket like Tony's men have. And right here—” she tapped her tiny chest again, exactly over her sternum, “the red stone was gone. There was only a loose gray thread hanging down, twisting like a worm.”

Tony Rigio, standing silently near the industrial refrigerator with his arms crossed over his chest, took a sudden, sharp breath. He looked over at Lorenzo, his weathered face hardening like cured concrete. The standard security force employed by the Beluchcci family wore mass-produced tactical black windbreakers with generic chrome snaps. But there was one faction inside the estate that wore custom-tailored Italian coats with red lacquer buttons.

“That’s the private security detail assigned to Marco’s personal residence,” Tony murmured, pitching his voice so only Lorenzo could hear. “Marco had eighteen of those coats commissioned in Milan last autumn for his inner circle. None of our perimeter guards wear them.”

Lorenzo didn’t blink. His expression remained an impenetrable mask of stoic authority, but his knuckles whitened against the mahogany arm of the kitchen chair. His cousin Marco was currently sitting in the small library down the corridor, supposedly reviewing logistics, route maps, and vendor contracts to find the source of the leak.

“Agent Voss,” Lorenzo said quietly, rising to his full height. “Take the pistol and the burner phone found in Elena's quarters. Run full forensic panels immediately—fingerprint lifting, touch DNA, and digital cell tower triangulation. I want to know who held that weapon and who sent those messages before the clock strikes midnight.”

Rachel slipped the evidence into sealed nylon evidence bags and nodded. “If your own family is behind this, Lorenzo, they aren't going to stop at an exploded SUV. You’re playing on a razor’s edge.”

“I’ve lived on a razor’s edge my entire life,” Lorenzo replied, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. “The only difference tonight is that a child pulled me back from the cliff, and I do not let debts go unpaid.”
