Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at Midnight

The lights in the master bedroom flickered once and died, instantly replaced by the dull amber glow of backup emergency generators. Downstairs, the muffled crack-crack-crack of suppressed automatic gunfire echoed through the stone foundations.

Nadia gasped, pulling the blanket to her chin, her eyes darting toward Leo’s crib.

""Nurse, take the child into the panic room behind the dressing mirror,"" Rourke commanded calmly, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

The nurse, trained for high-risk executive security, immediately scooped Leo into her arms and slipped through the concealed steel door disguised as a full-length mirror.

Rourke turned to Nadia. He reached beneath his sweater, unholstered a sleek custom semi-automatic pistol, and checked the chamber with a smooth, practiced click. He placed the weapon on the nightstand within her reach.

""Safety is off,"" Rourke said, looking into her eyes. ""Keep both hands on the grip. If anyone opens that door who isn't me or Vance, you empty the magazine into their chest.""

""Rourke, don't go down there,"" Nadia pleaded, her fingers catching the fabric of his sleeve. ""There are too many of them!""

Rourke leaned down, cupped her face in his large, warm hand, and pressed a firm, lingering kiss to her lips. It was the first time their lips had met in eleven months, and it tasted of old promises and desperate hope.

""Nobody touches my family, Nadia. Not anymore.""

He pulled away, turned, and strode out the heavy oak door, locking it from the outside.

Downstairs, the grand foyer of the estate had become a war zone. Glass from the shattered front atrium littered the marble floor. Silvio Marcone’s men had breached the outer iron gates using an armored ram, sweeping through the courtyard with assault rifles.

Rourke took the grand staircase two steps at a time, staying low. Vance and four security operators were already pinned behind the reinforced mahogany pillars of the dining hall, exchanging controlled bursts with the intruders.

""Silvio brought his personal hit squad,"" Vance shouted over the roar of gunfire. ""They’re trying to burn the house from the wings!""

""They won't get past the hall,"" Rourke said, his eyes scanning the shadows with chilling precision.

A mercenary in tactical gear rounded the corridor, raising a shotgun. Rourke didn't flinch. In one fluid, seamless movement, he raised his weapon and fired two center-mass shots. The intruder dropped instantly.

Rourke moved like a phantom through his own home. He knew every angle, every blind spot, every shadow. For fifteen minutes, the Lake Geneva estate echoed with the brutal efficiency of a king defending his castle. Rourke and Vance outmaneuvered the attackers, cutting them off in fatal choke points until the gunfire slowed to scattered, frantic bursts.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the back terrace.

Rourke sprinted through the smoke-filled gallery into the library. Standing in the center of the shattered French doors was Silvio Marcone himself.

Silvio was sixty-five, his gray hair slicked back, wearing an expensive wool overcoat flecked with mud and rain. In his hand, he held a heavy revolver. Beside him stood his last surviving bodyguard.

""Danner!"" Silvio roared, his voice thick with aged fury. ""You crippled my son! You broke his legs like a dog in the street!""

""Your son kicked a pregnant woman, Silvio,"" Rourke said, stepping out of the shadows, his gun lowered loosely at his side, projecting absolute contempt. ""He tried to murder my newborn son. He’s lucky I didn't send him home in pieces.""

Silvio froze, his eyes widening in shock. ""Your... your son?""

""The woman your idiots attacked was carrying my heir,"" Rourke said, his voice dropping to an icy whisper. ""You came here to kill me, Silvio. But all you’ve done is sign the death warrant for your entire bloodline.""

The bodyguard panicked, twitching his rifle upward.

Bang.

Vance fired from the library doorway, dropping the bodyguard instantly.

Silvio was left standing alone, his gun shaking in his aged hand as he stared down the barrel of Rourke’s merciless wrath.
