Chapter 3 - Blood Ties and Broken Alliances

The room was bathed in the dim blue hue of digital heart monitors. Nadia looked devastatingly small in the center of the mechanical hospital bed. Her face, usually alive with warmth and sharp intelligence, was swollen and bruised along the jawline. An endotracheal tube kept her chest rising and falling in an artificial, mechanical rhythm.

Rourke pulled a vinyl chair to the side of the bed. He sat down, slowly peeled off his leather gloves, and reached out.

His hands, rough from years of heavy work and violence, were huge against her delicate fingers. Her skin was freezing. He lifted her limp hand to his lips and pressed a kiss against her knuckles, feeling the faint, stubborn pulse tapping beneath her wrist.

""I'm sorry,"" he whispered into the quiet dark. ""I thought I was saving you from my world. I threw you right to the wolves.""

Footsteps clicked outside the door. Vance entered quietly, holding a tablet. His face was grim.

""We ran her address,"" Vance reported, keeping his voice subdued. ""She was living in a run-down walk-up apartment in Pilsen. Paying cash under an alias: Nadia Vance. Working odd shifts at a commercial bakery down by the rail yard until her pregnancy made it impossible.""

""Why Pilsen?"" Rourke asked without looking up. ""Why stay in Chicago?""

""Because she wanted to stay close to Meridian,"" Vance answered bluntly. ""One of the neighbors said she used to sit in the diner across the street from your restaurant on Thursday nights, just watching the lights come on.""

A knot of pure agony twisted in Rourke’s throat. She hadn’t run away to forget him. She had stayed in the shadow of his empire, watching him from afar while she scraped together coins to feed his unborn child.

""And the attack?"" Rourke’s voice turned to venom.

""Two men broke into her apartment three hours ago,"" Vance said, swiping on the screen. ""They didn't steal jewelry or electronics. They tore the place apart looking for something. When she tried to run, one of them struck her. The neighbor heard the commotion, grabbed a shotgun, and fired through the ceiling. The bastards fled. The neighbor called 911.""

""Did the neighbor get a description?""

""Better. Street cameras picked up their car leaving the alley. Blue sedan, stolen plates. We tracked it through the city traffic grid. The car was dumped two miles away behind an abandoned warehouse owned by a shell company."" Vance paused, his jaw tightening. ""The shell company traces back to Dominic Marcone.""

Rourke’s eyes darkened until they looked like bottomless pits of obsidian. Dominic Marcone. The hothead son of old man Silvio Marcone. Dominic had been trying to muscle into Rourke’s river docks for over a year.

""Dominic didn't know who she was,"" Vance added. ""Our intelligence says Dominic was looking for leverage against you. He’s been digging into your past employees, looking for anyone who might know your supply routes. He must have flagged Nadia’s sudden departure eleven months ago and assumed she stole company ledgers when you fired her. They didn't know she was carrying your child, Boss. They just thought she was an easy mark.""

Rourke slowly set Nadia’s hand down on the crisp sheet. He stood up, towering over the room.

""Dominic thought she was an easy mark,"" Rourke repeated softly. ""He thought a pregnant woman living alone had no one in this city to answer for her.""

He adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit.

""Vance.""

""Yes, Boss?""

""Where is Dominic Marcone right now?""

""He's hosting an underground poker game at the velvet lounge on 22nd Street. Celebrating a new shipment from Detroit.""

Rourke looked back at Nadia. He reached down, brushing a stray strand of dark hair away from the purple bruise blooming on her forehead. The fetal monitor down the hall chimed faintly—his son, breathing on his own in an incubator.

""Keep twelve men on this door,"" Rourke commanded. ""Nobody enters without DNA verification. If a fly lands on her window, shoot it.""

""And where are you going, Mr. Danner?"" Vance asked, though he already knew the answer.

Rourke slipped his gloves back on, his face carved from cold, unforgiving marble.
