Chapter 2 - The Red Zone

The minutes stretched into an agony of sterile white and metallic screams. Rourke stood anchored outside Operating Room 4, refusing to sit, refusing to take water, ignoring the terrified whispers of hospital staff skirting around him.

Paulette had found him ten minutes in, her face flushed with indignance. ""Rourke, this is humiliating! My father is having lunch with the district attorney right now, and you abandon me in the lobby for some... some street emergency?""

Rourke hadn't even looked at her. He simply pulled his phone from his pocket, dialed his head of private security, and spoke three flat words into the receiver.

""Vance. Come to Mercy General. Escort Miss Hargrove home. She is no longer permitted on any of my properties.""

Paulette gasped, her mouth opening and closing like a landed fish. ""You can't treat me like this! Do you know who my father is?""

""Your father exists because I allow his campaign accounts to stay full,"" Rourke murmured, finally turning his dark, dead eyes toward her. ""Walk away, Paulette. Before I remember that you're making noise while my family is fighting for their lives.""

The raw menace in his voice drained the color from her cheeks. She backed away slowly, turned on her designer heels, and fled toward the elevators.

Within twenty minutes, Vance arrived, flanked by six men in tailored dark suits. Vance was ex-military, a man with cold gray eyes and an absolute loyalty forged over fifteen years of shared violence.

""Boss,"" Vance said quietly, scanning the hallway. ""We’ve locked down the floor. No press, no outside visitors. What’s the situation?""

""Nadia is inside,"" Rourke said.

Vance’s stoic expression cracked for a fraction of a second. ""Miss Cole? I thought she was in Michigan.""

""She’s here. And she’s having my baby."" Rourke’s hand trembled slightly—a micro-tremor that Vance had never seen, not even when three rival hitmen had ambushed Rourke’s car in an alley two years ago. ""I need the best surgical specialists in North America flown in immediately. If this hospital doesn't have the blood supply, drain the private clinics. Do whatever it takes.""

""Understood."" Vance pulled his radio from his coat and began barking orders.

Suddenly, the red light above the operating room flickered to green. The heavy double doors swung open, and a lead surgeon stepped out, pulling down his bloody paper mask. Exhaustion lined every crease of his face.

Rourke moved before the man could draw breath, catching him by the shoulders. ""Tell me.""

""Mr. Danner... it was close. Catastrophic hemorrhage due to late-stage trauma. She arrived just in time."" The surgeon wiped sweat from his brow. ""We delivered a boy. Five pounds, four ounces. He’s in neonatal intensive care right now on oxygen support, but his vitals are stabilizing. He’s a fighter.""

A shudder ran through Rourke’s massive frame. A son. He had a son.

""And Nadia?"" Rourke demanded, his voice cracking. ""What about her?""

""She suffered severe internal trauma. Her heart stopped for ninety seconds on the table, Mr. Danner. We brought her back, but she’s in a medically induced coma. We stopped the bleeding, but the next forty-eight hours will decide if her organs recover from the shock.""

""Trauma?"" Rourke’s mind caught on the word like a barbed wire hook. ""What do you mean, trauma? Was she in an accident?""

The doctor hesitated, glancing nervously at the armed men standing down the hall. ""No, sir. This wasn't a car crash. The bruising on her abdomen, the fractured ribs... Mr. Danner, someone beat her.""

The corridor went deathly, terrifyingly still. The ambient humming of the fluorescent lights seemed to cut out entirely. Vance took an involuntary step back, recognizing the terrifying aura that settled over his boss.

Rourke didn't yell. He didn't punch the wall. Instead, a glacial stillness settled over his features. The monster that had spent a decade building an empire through calculated violence, the predator he had tried so hard to hide from Nadia’s gentle eyes, awoke in the deepest caverns of his soul.

Someone had laid hands on her. Someone had kicked his pregnant woman, had tried to kill his unborn child.

""Vance,"" Rourke whispered, his voice like dry leaves scraping across a tombstone.

""Yes, Boss?""

""Find out where she was living. Find out who touched her. And bring them to me breathing. If they die before I see their faces, you take their place.""

""On it,"" Vance said, and vanished down the emergency stairs.

Rourke stepped past the doctor and pushed open the doors to the recovery unit.
