Chapter 5 - An Empire on Alert

Before Nadia could demand an explanation, the heavy wooden door swung open. A nurse pushed a clear plastic incubator into the room, surrounded by two pediatric specialists.

Inside the transparent bassinet, swaddled tightly in a white cotton blanket with blue stripes, lay a tiny, wrinkled human being. He wore a knitted blue cap, his tiny fists tucked under his chin, his chest rising and falling in steady, perfect breaths.

Nadia forgot Rourke. She forgot the pain, the bruises, the syndicate, and the blood on Rourke’s sleeve.

""Bring him to me,"" she choked out, extending trembling arms.

The nurse smiled gently, lifting the fragile bundle out of the incubator and settling him carefully onto Nadia’s chest. The moment the infant felt the warmth of his mother’s skin, he let out a tiny, squeaking sigh and nuzzled against her collarbone.

Nadia burst into fresh tears, pressing her lips against the baby's warm forehead. ""My sweet boy... my brave boy... mommy's here. You're safe now.""

Rourke stood three feet away, paralyzed.

He had orchestrated hostile takeovers of multimillion-dollar corporations. He had faced down rival capos with guns pointed at his chest without flinching. But looking at that five-pound child resting against Nadia’s chest, Rourke felt utterly, terrifyingly helpless.

Nadia looked up at him. The fire in her eyes had softened into an exhausted truce.

""His name is Leo,"" she whispered. ""After my grandfather.""

""Leo,"" Rourke tested the name on his tongue. It felt sacred. ""Leo Danner.""

""Leo Cole,"" Nadia countered instantly, her voice firm despite her weakness. ""He hasn't earned your enemies yet, Rourke.""

Rourke swallowed the bitter taste of truth in her words. He slowly walked closer and extended one thick, calloused index finger toward the swaddle. Baby Leo stirred, and with instinctual grip strength, his impossibly tiny fingers curled around Rourke's finger.

Rourke stopped breathing.

The tiny grip was warm, fragile, and stronger than any chain ever forged. In that quiet room, the ruthless kingpin felt a sudden, seismic realignment of his entire universe. His empire, his money, his power—none of it meant anything. This fragile circle of mother and child was the only thing that mattered.

The door clicked open again. Vance stepped in, his face tight. He saw the baby and hesitated, dropping his eyes with immediate respect.

""Boss,"" Vance murmured from the threshold. ""We have a situation outside.""

Rourke gently disengaged his finger from Leo’s grip, tucking the blanket securely around his son’s shoulder. He stepped out into the private hallway with Vance, leaving the door cracked just enough to keep his eyes on them.

""Speak,"" Rourke said.

""Silvio Marcone just found out what happened to his son Dominic,"" Vance said in a low voice. ""Dominic is in surgery at St. Jude’s with two shattered kneecaps and a broken jaw. The old man is out of his mind with rage. He’s calling in favors from the New York families. He’s putting every soldier he has onto the street.""

""Let him,"" Rourke said coldly. ""Dominic laid hands on the mother of my child. He’s lucky I left him with lungs to breathe.""

""Silvio doesn't see it that way, Boss. He thinks you broke the peace over a line cook. He doesn't know about the baby yet, but his scouts are watching Mercy General. If they realize you’re guarding this wing with half our private security, they’ll figure it out.""

Rourke’s eyes narrowed into slits of razor-sharp steel. ""Then we don't stay here. Mercy General is too exposed. Prepare the armored transport. We’re moving Nadia and Leo to the compound at Lake Geneva within the hour.""

""The medical transport might stress her incisions—""

""Then bring three doctors, two pediatric nurses, and an entire mobile surgical unit in the convoy,"" Rourke ordered without hesitation. ""Money is no object. Secure the route. I want thirty armed men in the convoy. Silvio Marcone wants a war? I’ll give him an apocalypse. But he will not touch my family.""

""Right away, Boss.""

Rourke turned back to the room. Nadia was watching him through the glass, her hazel eyes wide with sudden realization. She had heard enough to know the storm was breaking.

And this time, Rourke wasn't going to push her away into the rain. He was going to stand in front of the lightning.
