Chapter 9 - The Vow in the Storm's Wake

Two weeks later, the Holloway estate on Jones Street in downtown Savannah was transformed. The grim, fortress-like atmosphere that had hung over the property since Jolene’s disappearance was completely eradicated. Flowers—white roses, fresh lavender, and potted hydrangeas—filled every terrace and marble urn. The heavy wrought-iron gates were open, guarded not by shadowy mercenaries with concealed weapons, but by uniformed security operating with quiet professionalism.
In the private garden behind the mansion, beneath a centuries-old wisteria canopy, a small, intimate ceremony took place. There were no cameras from the society pages, no corrupt politicians seeking photo opportunities, and no corporate financiers looking for leverage.
Only Arthur Vance, Trent, Dr. Helen Chen, and an elderly municipal judge who had known Grant’s family for forty years stood as witnesses.
Jolene stood before Grant wearing an elegant, flowing ivory silk gown designed to drape comfortably over her eight-month pregnancy. Her cheeks had regained their youthful rose blush; her auburn hair cascaded over her shoulders in soft, healthy waves. The haunted girl from the Brotton Street boutique had vanished, replaced by a radiant woman whose strength had weathered the darkest storm Savannah could conjure.
Grant took both of her hands in his. He was not wearing his father’s old signet ring anymore; he had removed the silver band he had spun obsessively for months. In its place, on the velvet pillow held by Trent, rested two simple, perfectly forged platinum bands.
""I spent five months believing the world was empty,"" Grant said, his voice carrying clearly through the fragrant garden breeze, steady and profound. ""I walked through this city like a ghost among ruins. When I saw you through that glass, alive and carrying our future, I understood that power means nothing unless it exists to protect the people you love. I vow to stand between you and every shadow of this world. My name is yours, my life is yours, and every breath I have left belongs to you and our child.""
Jolene looked into his gray eyes, her own shining with tears of absolute peace. ""I kept faith in the dark, Grant. When they told me you were dead to me, when they told me you would never care, I looked at our child and knew the truth of who you were. You came for me through the fire. I choose you, today and every day, as my husband, my protector, and my home.""

The judge cleared his throat, smiling warmly. ""By the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife.""
Grant stepped forward, sliding the platinum band onto her finger before cupping her face in both hands and kissing her with a tenderness that brought a rare smile to Trent’s scarred face. The past had been buried in the marshes; the future was standing right here in the sunlight.
