Chapter 4 - Under the Holloway Shield

The private estate on Tybee Island was cloaked in fog when the black SUV rolled through the reinforced iron gates at 4:30 in the morning. This fortress, buried deep within salt marshes and ancient, moss-draped live oaks, was known only to Trent and Grant’s most loyal inner circle. It possessed its own medical bay, an underground generator, and a private dock leading out to deep open water.
Grant carried Jolene out of the vehicle himself. Her exhaustion had overwhelmed her adrenaline once they hit the highway; she was half-conscious, her head resting against his chest, her fingers tangled in his lapel.
""Get Dr. Chen down here immediately,"" Grant barked as Trent opened the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite. ""And post four sentries on the marsh perimeter. Thermal optics only. If anything larger than a raccoon crosses that fence line without my transponder, put a bullet through it.""
""Understood, Boss,"" Trent replied, his face grim as he surveyed the pale woman in Grant’s arms. ""And Desmond? He called your private line three times while you were driving. Left a message saying there was an 'incident' at a property near the docks and wanted to know your location.""
""Let him sweat,"" Grant said coldly, carrying Jolene into the bedroom and placing her gently onto the king-sized mattress.
Within twenty minutes, Dr. Helen Chen—a discreet physician who had patched up Holloway family wounds for a decade—arrived with portable ultrasound equipment and basic IV fluids. Grant stood by the foot of the bed, refusing to leave the room while Chen examined her.
The room was silent except for the rhythmic whoosh-whoosh of the ultrasound monitor. Jolene’s eyes opened slowly, looking at the glowing black-and-white screen beside her bed. A tiny, well-defined shape appeared, a miniature spine curving gracefully, little fists tucked close to a round head. The heart monitor beeped rapidly, a steady, thunderous gallop: 145 beats per minute. Strong. Healthy. Resilient.
Tears spilled over Jolene’s eyelashes, pooling on the white cotton pillow. Grant stared at the screen, his chest tightening to the point of physical ache. That was his child. His heir. Alive, despite five months of neglect, poverty, and terror.
""She’s severely malnourished, Grant,"" Dr. Chen said bluntly, wiping the conductive gel from Jolene’s stomach. ""Mild anemia, borderline dehydration, and chronic stress. But the baby is stubborn. Growth percentiles are within normal margins. If she rests, eats properly, and receives IV vitamins for the next forty-eight hours, they will both be fine.""
""She will have whatever she needs,"" Grant said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. He walked over to the side of the bed as Chen packed her monitors and slipped quietly from the room.
Jolene looked up at him, her defenses finally crumbling under the warmth of the room and the undeniable reality of safety. ""Why didn't you marry someone else before now, Grant? Why wait five months?""
Grant sat on the edge of the bed, taking her cold, thin hand into his large, calloused palms. ""Because after they told me you were gone, I didn't care about anything. The Langford wedding was Desmond’s design. I agreed to it because a dead man doesn't care who he sleeps beside. I thought my life was over, Jolene. I was just running an engine until it ran out of fuel.""

Her lips trembled. ""Desmond won't stop. He has the Langfords behind him now. If you break this marriage contract, their family will pull their bank investments from your shipping lines. You could lose the organization.""
Grant brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with deliberate, terrifying finality. ""Let them take the ships. Let them take the empire. I rebuilt this city once with my bare hands; I can burn it to the ground and build it again. But nobody touches my family twice.""
