Chapter 9 - Ashes of an Empire

The sunrise over Lake Michigan was a pale wash of gold and lavender, cutting through the retreating storm clouds and reflecting off the sleek glass façade of Croft Holdings. Down below, the city of Chicago was waking up to news reports of a massive industrial fire at Navy Pier, attributed by local authorities to a catastrophic gas main explosion.

On the 74th floor, the executive offices were entirely silent.

Meera stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, watching the sun climb over the lake. She had showered in the executive suite, washing away the blood, soot, and rain. She was dressed in comfortable black slacks and a soft cashmere sweater. In her hands, she held a warm ceramic mug of black coffee.

Behind her, the heavy double doors clicked open.

Damian walked in. He had changed into a clean, impeccably tailored three-piece charcoal suit. The bandages on his split knuckles were hidden neatly beneath his cuffs, though a faint purple bruise remained along his jaw. He held a leather portfolio under his arm.

He walked over to the glass, standing beside her, looking out over the sprawling city that now answered entirely to his command.

""The federal investigators closed their preliminary inquiry an hour ago,"" Damian said, his tone measured and professional, though his eyes carried an unmistakable warmth. ""Marcone’s offshore accounts have been seized under maritime forfeiture laws. The remainder of his domestic assets were acquired by our holding firm at five cents on the dollar.""

""So the paper trail is clean?"" she asked, taking a slow sip of her coffee.

""Immaculate,"" Damian replied. ""Thanks to the work you did before dinner yesterday. You built a labyrinth no one will ever unravel.""

Meera smiled faintly, shaking her head. ""It feels surreal. Twelve hours ago, I was sitting across from a man who wanted to explain mutual funds to me.""

Damian turned to face her, leaning back against the structural beam of the window. ""I had my men check on David.""

Meera raised an eyebrow. ""You did?""

""He made it through the kitchen exit, caught a cab to his mother's house in Naperville, and called his office to request a two-week leave of absence,"" Damian said with a subtle, dry smirk. ""He’s safe. And he’s thoroughly terrified of fancy restaurants.""

Meera let out a genuine, breathless laugh—the first real laugh that had escaped her chest in months. ""He was a good man, Damian. He didn't deserve to be caught in the middle of our insanity.""

""He was an ordinary man,"" Damian corrected gently. ""And you, Meera Finch, were never meant for an ordinary life. You would have withered away in those suburbs within six months.""

Meera didn't argue. She knew he was telling the absolute truth. The adrenaline, the sharp intellectual combat of outmaneuvering federal prosecutors and rival cartels, the raw, unfiltered intensity of surviving by Damian’s side—she couldn't pretend she didn't crave it. She had tasted fire, and she could never go back to cold porridge.

Damian opened the leather portfolio and placed a thick stack of legal documents on the low marble table beside them.

""What is this?"" Meera asked, glancing down at the papers.

""A full partnership,"" Damian said simply. ""Forty-nine percent equity in Croft Holdings, with equal voting rights on the executive board. You will no longer manage my money from the shadows. You will sit at the head of the table beside me. The entire syndicate will know that speaking to you is the same as speaking to me.""

Meera stared at the documents, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the ruthless hierarchy of the American underworld, such an arrangement was unprecedented. Mafia bosses didn't share equity; they didn't grant equal power to anyone, let alone the woman who had started as an assistant.

""Why would you give me this?"" she whispered, looking up into his dark, searching eyes. ""You don't share power with anyone.""

""Because power isn't what matters to me anymore,"" Damian said, stepping closer until only inches separated them. ""You are.""
